Am assuming that this is what I’m experiencing as well … ?
Watching a Dual Language ( English + French ) … War of the Worlds 2019 … Choose English Forced, so that the French dialogue comes through with subtitles, but the English doesn’t … suddenly stopped working …
I can understand enough French to get through the show, but I know I’m missing a fair amount 
The logic behind this change is quite confusing. Everything was working perfectly before this decision, now it’s not, changing every subtitle manually like in VLC is annoying.

As previously mentioned, this was a deliberate change. I don’t know the details on why or what it will take to change it back. That’s above my pay grade. First step would be to make a feature request to change it back to the old method. This will help gauge the impact of this change.
Creating a feature request to get lost functionality back? That’s not how I understand the difference between a feature request and a bug/issue.
Also, following that logic, what feature request was the base for that change? I’d like to know what use case this would actually enable (no sarcasm here - I’d really like to know this).
I’m a software developer myself and I understand that deliberate changes can have unforseen side effects. But if that happens, the change must either be modified to support both use cases, or a new setting must be added.
Please bring this issue/thread up with whoever has the power to bring movement to this issue. Waiting for votes on a “feature request” to change this back will never lead to anything. Because compared with other feature requests, the amount of users affected by this is quite small.

If an audio track matching your preferred audio language is not found, Plex will try to display the most appropriate subtitle track using the following logic:
- If a subtitle that matches your preferred subtitle language is found, the first one will be displayed….
So this says exactly what we want and how it always worked. So why is the actual functionality different than the documentation? And no, the solution is not to change the documentation, that would just be crappy product management. It cannot be too difficult to have both options old and new side by side.
Though I still fail to understand what use case the new functionality is actually used for, because it seems to be completely weird behavior to me.
That is the old behavior. That document hasn’t been updated to reflect the new deliberate change to the behavior.
Whatever the case, we’d still expect this to be addressed as @cremor already said, not by raising a feature request but more by treating this as a bug.
If you change a functionality that was working in a particular way for years and suddenly it works completely different, that’s usually considered a bug, especially if the “new” functionality doesn’t really seem to make any sense from a usability point of view.
So please try and get this pushed up the chain to the development team that can take a look at this. Whatever the intention of this change was, it is clear from the documentation that the original functionality was different and I don’t see a reason why both ways could not co-exist by just introducing a new option into the configuration so everyone can have their way.
That said, I see most people replying on this thread are actually “paying” customers. So it just seems fair that this should be looked at, doesn’t it?

With the last version of PMS, i can’t download subtitles on the go like i used to do when auto-search failed. It downloads them, but they don’t show up on the video. Things keep going better and and better.
For me this is totally different.
I almost never want to show subtitles. But for some reason it keeps showing subtitles on nearly every damn movie or TV-show I watch. And I even have subtitles set to off!
Update… I just solved it by unchecking auto selection of audio and subtitles.
Update again… Seems I was wrong. Did not fix it but it changed the subtitle it used… That was all.
Looks like nobody is giving this the right attention.
This bug needs a higher priority because this is severely annoying!

No subtitles are selected on the movies. Can someone in this forum confirm this?
Please Plex don’t say this is a feature because it definitely can’t be.
Hopefully it will be seriously looked at. I know i am on a beta built but i don’t feel that I’ve been taken serious by saying that clearly broken things are features.

Still nothing? This is a major issue. Having all the movies / TV shows in my language with English subtitles and not having them on media with a language different from mine is a FEATURE!?

Hey, could you provide metadata XML for an affected file? This definitely isn’t intended behavior, and I’ll be happy to help get to the bottom of it.
For those who are having issues with the “with foreign audio” setting, could you elaborate more on your use-cases? This change was made with this case in mind:
I’d assumed that people would have their subtitle language set to their own native language, but maybe what we’re seeing here is bilingual users setting the subtitle language to something else, maybe because of better subtitle availability in their second language than their first?
Sorry to say that adding new prefs to this (even seemingly-simple flags like “native language = audio vs subtitles”) won’t be immediate; user-level prefs (vs server- or client-level ones) can be a lot more complex to build out than you might expect. However, I’m currently working on developing a new set of account-level language preferences for Plex, and I’d very much like to make sure they handle all of your use-cases, so please let me know exactly what you’d like to see here.
Currently I’m planning on providing support for each of the prefs to support multiple languages in priority order, and for the audio list to be able to contain “original” as a pseudo-language referring to whatever the native language of the media is (subject to metadata availability). However, given this thread, I’m not quite sure how those lists should interact with the “with foreign audio” setting, so please let me know what you need out of them!
I’m guessing that right now, people are using these settings in ways that we hadn’t expected as a sort of a workaround for the existing options not providing enough flexibility for you to be able to tell us what you really want, so hopefully with your feedback, the new prefs design can provide that flexibility and make the behavior and intent a lot clearer.
