So i moved my data to a new drive, its still ext4 like the old, i mounted it to /media/8tb and made my normal folder /mnt/media a symlink ( so i can make drive changes without having to adjust any configs) now though, whenever i scp a file to the media folder the library no longer auto updates. I’m assuming its some kind of permission issue, but i’m not sure how the filesystem notifies plex so i don’t know where to begin looking into this?
Can you provide the DEBUG logs, gathered right after completing a Scan?
It sounds like a permissions issue.
Your logs will confirm whether or not user plex can see everything correctly.
Given you have the files in /media, on Linux with Gnome desktop, this is a reserved location. You can see it but Plex can’t (Linux is strict)
This procedure will help you move it to a new location where you can administer and Plex can see them.
i dont have gnome though, its just a headless centos box. my username is the owner and in the plex group along with the plex user. but if it is a permission issue then why does it show up during a manual scan? the last movie i added was Ralph wrecks the internet. This is definitely a huge part of the problem.

I can’t see anything else because DEBUG logging is turned off.
I unfortunately need that on to see what’s happening.
Can you please turn it on and run a Scan Files again?
i did turn it on, should it have been verbose instead? sounds like i may need to rebuild the DB? Round 2: Plex Media Server Logs_2019-02-15_23-28-04.zip (1.6 MB)
No… Verbose wastes. I only get to see 2 elapsed minutes. It’s also so difficult to diagnose.
Back to DEBUG on, VERBOSE off.
Then restart the server.
Wait 60 seconds.
Now rescan
ok, third time is a charmPlex Media Server Logs_2019-02-16_00-45-11.zip (1.5 MB)

Not good.
You can play this file in Plex?
According to this, the codec is not able to read it. It means Plex shouldn’t be able to play it either.
If this is true,
- Stop Plex
- open shell
- cd “/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Codecs”
- As root, delete everything
- Start plex
- Play the file. It will download the codec again
- Now force scan again.
- If the file is still unplayable. How you are copying them / something is wrong here.
that file is broken, the source doesn’t work either before i copied it. but how’s that related to scanning the library automatically?
That file is one of many I found in the scanner logs.
If the scanner can’t read the file, it will be deemed invalid. You won’t see it.
Whether that is one of the files you’re not seeing or not. I do see that. It begs the question, how much of your media is compromised to the point PMS can’t read , recognize, and add it?
i don’t quite follow. that episode is already in the library and all the metadata present, it just doesn’t play That episode was added a while ago before any drive changes. As far as i know not many are bad but honestly i haven’t gone through everything. My problem is since changing the drive new media isn’t popping up, as if whatever the notification process of the filesystem changing and prompting plex to start updating isn’t working any more.
Then perhaps I got distracted with this bad media.
I do not find any Permission Denied or iNotify errors telling me PMS can’t scan.
It is as if the directory you list has no visbility to plex:plex at the top-most level
or , for some reason unknown, the directory name did not get added.
In general, symlinks are getting more dangerous to use with PMS.
Editing the TLD and not losing existing metadata is extremely easy.
