Plex library not updating automatically synology ds218+

I updated the hard drive from a single 2tb hard drive to two 12tb hard drives (Raid 1). I copied and reinstalled synology configuration and hyper back up containing previous files. Plex server does not automatically update the library anymore, I have to manually re-scan the library for new files to show up on plex player. I have made sure that (Scan my library automatically) & (Run a partial scan when changes are detected) under Settings->Library are checked off. I have also made sure that permissions for my Plex shared folder have all been set to (Read/Write). Any Ideas what might be causing the issue. I attached zip file of server logs. not sure if I uploaded correct logs, this is my first time posting on this forum. Thanks!

Read the Synology FAQ.

Opening input file: "/volume1/Plex/Movies/Motherless.Brooklyn.2019.1080p.BluRay.x264-SPARKS[rarbg]/Motherless.Brooklyn.2019.1080p.BluRay.x264-SPARKS.mkv"

You have your media installed in the wrong location. Do not install media in /Plex. See FAQ 6.

After re-organizing your media, check permissions.
See FAQ: Setting permissions to allow Plex access to media files

Although not strictly required, suggest you follow Plex media naming guidelines. Plex does a better job of matching, downloading metadata, etc when you follow the guidelines. This is especially true for TV shows, with which Plex is very picky.

Instead of:
/Movies/Motherless.Brooklyn.2019.1080p.BluRay.x264-SPARKS[rarbg]/Motherless.Brooklyn.2019.1080p.BluRay.x264-SPARKS.mkv

Use:
/Movies/Motherless Brooklyn (2019)/Motherless Brooklyn (2019).mkv

Alternately, use square brackets to hold the non-Plex info. Plex ignores information between the first set of square brackets.

/Movies/Motherless Brooklyn (2019) [1080p.BluRay.x264-SPARKS]/Motherless Brooklyn (2019) [1080p.BluRay.x264-SPARKS].mkv

If I may request, per the warning files I place in the Plex share, Please do not put media IN the Plex share. The share exists solely for PMS use. It is visible solely for diagnostic purposes to avoid the need to use the command line (Putty / SSH)

Because you’ve placed your media in the Plex share, you’ve used up all of the default 8192 default directory monitoring slots. Plex creates thousands of directories (typically 50,000 for a medium sized library) which quickly overflows the table. “Permission denied” is reported by the Linux kernel when the table is full. User plex does not have permission to expand the table dynamically. The table can only be expanded by the root user.

I urge moving the media from the Plex share at the earliest convenience.

I did as you suggested and moved all content from the shared “Plex” folder and created independent share folders named "Movies & “TV Shows”. “Movie” folder is now updating automatically, but the “TV Shows” folder is not. I double check all permission settings and appear to be same as the “Movie” Folder. I am missing something? your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If the movies are now automatically updating but episodes are not, we might now have the true situation where there are more than 8192 directories (folders) in use.

8192 is the Linux default.

I recommend this procedure now (to avoid using the Linux command line) to see what’s needed and customize DSM to suit your needs.

Follow instructions but still not working. “TV shows” folder is still not automatically updating. Attached is image of task I created. I counted a total of 1487 folders. Attached are logs as well.

Create task image

We like to bump up to the next even multiple of 32768 (as I had written) to keep kernel memory nicely aligned and also room to grow in the future but that is ok for now. Next time, please consider increasing to 98304

Since having made the change, has PMS been restarted?

Looking at the logs is either indicative of it not having been restarted or a small math error and not allocating enough table space?

I increased it to 98304 and it worked!. both “TV Shows” and “Movies” are updating automatically now. I really appreciate it. Thanks!

You’re welcome. It looked like you were really close .

Glad it’s solved now.

Would you mind marking the solution for others to find.

Actually just noticed that I placed the file in the root folder of “TV Shows” and not the subfolder for the tv series. It appears to only update library automatically when files are place in the root folder and not in subfolders. any idea what is causing this? Thanks!

If you /volume1/TV Shows as your top,
placed the file as `/volume1/TV Shows/some-series-episode.ext,
with it not being detected?

  1. permissions
  2. the inotify we ran into
  3. the existence of the Series/Season/episodes overriding it.

Here is an example

When the file is /volume1/TV Shows it updates automatically

But when file is in /volume1/TV Shows/Ray Donovan it does not

Attached are logs. Thank you!

Forgot to attach logs here they are

The correct structure to have is:

Ray Donovan/
  Season 1/
    Ray Donovan.S01E01.optional title.ext

what you have is a mixture. Definitely not the way to do this.
I urge getting the media curated.

If you have a lot to do, I recommend FileBot. It is licensed but $6/year (cheaper if longer term). It turns hours into seconds (literally).

I’ll help you with the renaming templates if needed.

Has PMS been restarted since increasing the table size and a fresh set of logs downloaded ?
