Library organization (Alphabetizing, capitalization)

Hello,
I’m considering obtaining a paid subscription. But before I do so, there’s one thing I’m hoping I can resolve.
I have a digital music library of just about 1TB. I’ve spent years meticulously organizing, naming, tagging each record so that it’s alphabetized and organized to my liking.
Upon loading my library into Plex (albeit with a free membership at the moment), I’ve noticed that it’s alphabetizing artist names by first name, not last name. (John Lennon appearing in the J’s, not the L’s, for instance), and even more aggravating…it’s alphabetizing any band that begins with “The” under “T”. (The Beatles are in the “T’s”, and not “B’s”, for instance)
This may make me sound like a curmudgeon, but it is absolutely unworkable for me. Especially when all of my things are saved/tagged how I wish them to be…not sure why it doesn’t line up that way in Plex.
Basically, I like it organized the way any record store has music organized alphabetically.

Also…(and I admit…this one is VERY picky, but after all the time I’ve spent over the years doing it, I’d love to have my Plex library reflect it) I’ve noticed that conjunction words are in small letters in both artist names and song/album titles…words such as a, or, and, it, is, with, etc.
Again, I know I sound like a fussy jerk, but this drives me nuts when I’ve saved everything over the years to have all words in titles capitalized. (I can totally live without this one, though)

On one hand, I can see how I can go in to each and every one and change it, and save it. That’s fine. But please tell me there’s a setting or something where it will just reflect the way my library is organized, and save me the countless hours it would take me to change all of the artist names to be organized by last name, and the “The” bands to be put in their proper section of the alphabet.

Other than that, it looks friggin great, and I’m sold on a lifetime subscription if I can sort this out.
Thank you!

When you tagged your files, did you populate the Album Sort Order field? Plex will normally pick that up and add it to the Sort Album field in the Plex database. Artist Sort Order is treated the same way.

Plex normally ignores articles (the, an, a, etc.) at the beginning of titles. If it isn’t doing so, there’s a reason for it. Here’s a thread with some discussion on possible causes.

As for the capitalization issue, I suspect this is because Plex is getting metadata from Musicbrainz, rather than your local files (which may be contributing to all the issues you’ve reported here). The capitalization practice you describe is standard English grammar, and it is the documented style guideline of Musicbrainz. If your embedded tags truly are meticulous, you may want to make sure Plex is configured to prefer them over online sources (be aware, you’ll quickly learn of any mistakes in your tagging. Trust me!)

Hehe, I’m sure that will rat out any tagging mistakes over the years!
Thanks for all this, I will check out all your suggestions and see how they work.
Thanks!

It sure as hell did for me!
