Lifetime Plex access with a managed user account

Hi, I bought Plex lifetime access many years ago and was able to share user access to my libraries with a friend (outside my home) with no issues. The last time I used that was several years ago and then I recently created a new user but it shows up as “managed user,” which I don’t remember the other profile showing.

After I helped my friend set it up, she tried to use it on her phone app and it prompted her to pay for a subscription just to access the same libraries I set up for the previous friend. I never had this issue before - did Plex change something? Does she need to pay per month just to use playback on the access I gave her to my libraries? This would be very annoying because I usually only share with one other person outside my home and now it’s making one of us pay.

There is two ways you can share your libraries. One is by making the person a managed user and one is just sharing your library with anybody who has a Plex account with their own email

A Managed user is supposed to be part of your home like someones child. I believe that allows them to stream videos on mobile devices just like you can. In the settings this is under “Plex Home”

A regular account with its own email is different. That person will get prompted to pay a one time fee to unlock the ability to stream. You get limited to 1 minute of video playback before you get the notice to pay. This kind of account would be in the settings under “Manage Library Access”

Thanks… I think what I might have done wrong is that I didn’t have her set up a free Plex account first and then invite her. I created a “managed user” account for her and then sent an invite to her email before she created the Plex account. She then created a new free Plex account upon receiving the invite. I removed the “managed user” account from my Plex Home and then invited her as Plex user. Hopefully that works - I just want her to be able to access Plex from outside my home without having to pay a monthly fee. I’m not sure if mobile access requires the fee - I thought I saw that on another post, but I could also have her use her laptop instead if that’s the case.

Yeah, when you set up a managed account no invitation gets sent by email. You don’t even need an email for that type of account

Either kind of account doesn’t require a monthly fee.

You can share your server with anybody using a regular account and watch it on most devices like tv’s or a computer. That’s free

The only devices that are affected are mobile devices like phones or tablets

You can bypass all additional fees by paying a one time price to unlock her phone. I think that’s only 5 dollars

Ok, that cleared it up. Thanks again!
