Lightpack Support

Cool :) Will look at getting a clone off eBay at some point - can't decide if I want to go for a strip LED setup, or an individual LED..

Single LED: Led_on_monitor.jpg

LED strip: LED_strip_white.jpg

Just ordered mine. Hope it works. Can someone explain to me if there is a difference between screen grabbing mode and some plugin so that it links to plex.

hope the question is clear. :P

i am asking because some tv series i have are cropped 4:3 so the screen grapper picks up black on the sides. Maybe there is a way to let prismatik look at the media in steed of whats on the screen.

p.s. I came up with the question while testing with the virtual setup of prismatik.

I ordered mine too with the Lightpack preorder. It’s a bit more expensive than the clones on eBay, but I think it’s worth supporting these guys. Plus the control unit looks much tidier

I have also ordered lightpack still waiting for mine I currently run plex on my Netgear Readynas and use it on my sumsung tvs my windows 8 phones and android phones and windows 8 computers is there any news on weather ill be able to make this work server side so I don't have to hook up a computer to my tv and using it that way

I love plex and use it multipul times a day I don't want to even look at xbmc

Plex is my life and it seems to only get better with time

For those interested, I've just been doing some tinkering with the Prismatik application (The Software that monitors your display and outputs the signal to the led module).

You can set it to control a 'Virtual LED Device' Which simulates in the software, what the LED's would be doing if connected.

I'm pleased to report that this is completely successful in OS X Mavericks running PHT, on any media content. Now, I cannot verify that this success would translate to the hardware (Which I don't yet own), but I see no reason it shouldn't, as the software is doing all the hard work.

My computer is a Retina MBP, 2.6GHz quad core i7, 16GB RAM.

With the Grab delay at 50ms I get a good 18-20fps at all times, and it's running at around 30% CPU usage.

If I drop the delay to 40ms, FPS increases to 23-25 (Perfect for film playback) and CPU usage increases to around 33%.

If I drop to around 20ms, FPS is in the ballpark of 50-55, and CPU draw increases significantly, to about 43-45%.

I'm planning on buying a Mac Mini in the next few weeks as the TV is going to be moved to another area along with the rest of the HT setup, so I'd be interested to know if anyone with one can do some similar tests on their own machine? Obviously my current machine is considerably more powerful than a base spec Mac Mini so I'm just a little concerned about how smoothly it'll run with Prismatik running a large amount of the time.

I've done a bit of research today and ordered the components for the Adalight project.

Very excited to get the components and have a play! I got all the parts from eBay UK for £51 all in.

I'll be using Prismatik to control it after the limited testing I was able to do today. I'll let you all know how it goes!

I ordered 2 Lightpack units as I loved my old Philips Ambilight TV but you can't seem to get one with four sided Ambilight these days sadly or, not in 55"+ anyway.

Asides from whiting to support the guys that bothered to do this, their units look to be much tidier IMO and a lot less hassle in general.

Hat's off to you all for confirming that they work with PHT though as I'm running a Mac Mini with PHT so it should work just peachy. If I remember when the units arrive though I will post what I find.

It does look way cool. :D

K.

The Adalight components turned up yesterday afternoon and, well, it's amazing!

Took me all of 1 hour to get it working completely, all I need to do now is a bit of tweaking with Prismatik to get the effect dialled!

Need to get it all mounted onto my TV and it's done!

All in all, VERY easy to get it working!

Here we are!

All working perfectly and I'm very pleased! Running on my rMBP Dec 2012, with PHT under Mavericks. No glitches at all.

Looks very realistic and much better then Ambilight, wow!

I would like to use it, but with my projector in the living room it makes no sense, I think. :frowning:

Lovely job. Would you mind making a guide in here? I am sure a lot of people would love to get a step by step (and with links to which things you bought), to get this up and running.

How man LEDs did you use and how big is your TV? I found a Pack on ebay with 10 Ledstripes á 9 Leds and i'm not sure it's enough for my 60" TV :-/

I used 50 LED's in a single string, and my TV is a 42". It's perfect and I'd say 50 LED's would be suitable up to around 50-52". Beyond that you'd start to see gaps in the light.

Here's the link to the actual guide I used - But as I'm in the UK and wanted more lights, I didn't purchase their kit. I went to eBay and bought the following:

![post-50955-0-22495300-1389723315.jpg|355x500](upload://usr2BR0TwqUBFc4PByMVRZlDwlk.jpg)

LED's - £30

Arduino Uno R3 - £15

Power Supply - £5

Power adapter - £1

Total - £51

The one differences between my project and the Adalight project is the software I use to control the lights, and the lights themselves.

One note about my lights, is that the plugs were the wrong way round, meaning I initially sent the clock and data into the output section of the LED string. I found that only the first LED was illuminating, and with completely random colours. This did no harm to the lights and switching the wires remedied it immediately. Power and ground can go to either end of the LED string.

They use the Adalight application which runs from the software 'Processing'. I found this to be a little clunky and lacking in control, not to mention that you have to do some basic but time consuming coding if you're using more than 25 LED's or mounting them in any other way. It was also VERY processor intensive, as high as 85% CPU even on my quad core i7. Can't imagine how it'd run on the DC i5 Mac Mini I'll soon be moving my media centre to.

Instead, I opted to use the Lightpack application 'Prismatik'. This application has a full GUI which makes life much easier for someone like myself who doesn't know how to code without explicit instruction. If you choose to use Prismatik (Which I'd strongly advise), you do not need to install Processing or the Adalight/Colourswirl applications. Just flash your Arduino with the Adalight sketch using IDE and then launch Prismatik. Configuring the Arduino using the tutorial above will teach you enough to understand how to connect it to Prismatik.

The LED layout process (Which you're walked through when you create a profile, after opening the application for the first time, is very easy. Just choose how many boxes you need, and move them where you need them. Very conveniently, the LED corresponding to the box you're adjusting lights up while you click it.

I found that a box size of around 100-120 pixels to work best. Any larger than that and they start to read too much of an average, watering down the effect and largely giving you white as a colour output (Because it's reading a large number of colours.) I first created larger boxes thinking it'd give a more intense effect by taking in more information, but found this was not the case.

I did my initial tests with this video. Be sure to test with some proper video content too however, as the large blocked colours in the video are great for initial tests, but not ideal for telling you about localised colour clusters, such as spotlights and explosions etc.

Hopefully this helps those of you who decide to explore this project. I STRONGLY recommend you give it a go. It's very cheap and very easy to set up. I am not an electronics person, nor a coder by any measures and I was able to get this all up and running without much work at all.

Any other questions please ask, and I'll do my best to answer them!

Sorry just to confirm, I know people have gotten clones to work - but can anyone confirm it's working with Lightpack?

Well Prismatik works fine, and that's the official application that Lightpack make and use.

The only difference is the hardware, which should have no impact on the way it works - They're just lights.

Ok i think i have found a way to make this work with my Roku.

After watching this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEgOqKYg0h4

i should be able to output the hdmi signal from my roku to my HTPC in another room over usb. its going to be crazy and i hope it works

Its going to look like this

ROKU->HDMI CABLE->HDMI SPLITTER->HDMI CABLE->HDMI TO AV CONVERTER->AV CABLES->AV CAPTURE TO USB CARD->USB UTP(Both lightpack and USB capture will be over Ethernet using a hub off USB UTP)-> ETHERNET OVER POWERLINE->USB UTP MALE END->HTPC(MAC MINI)

It looks crazy i know.

Lightpack arrived and all works fine  B)

Lightpack arrived and all works fine  B)

What are you using it on?

Sorry for the late reply tangcla

Using it on a 40" Samsung with my htpc (i5 and 8GB of RAM)

I've been pushing lightpack to the max these last few days, (1ms delay) and noticed some tearing now in video so might have to put it back to its original state.

Got my lightpack, and can’t get the prismatik, software to recognize it on my Mac mini. I installed the software ahead of time and played around with it in virtual mode, now I can’t get our of virtual mode. I uninstalled the software and reinstalled it but it’s like nothing changed.

Any tips? The company that makes the lightpacks has HORRIBLE customer service
