My question is, besides making separate Photo folder per managed user, is there more clever way to limit each user albums to be only visible to that same user?

You could work with labels (editing the library items; Labels can be assigned on the Sharing tab). That being said… this will be quite cumbersome as you need to tag all photos accordingly.
