As a parent, it would be nice to be able to lock the app to a kids profile on a device. I know you can add pins to other profiles to not allow the kid to switch to a different profile without the pin, but that impacts all devices. It would be nice to limit the app on that one device to only the one profile, unless a parent gets involved.
And how do think how it should be signalled to the app that a parent is involved?
After all, someone has to set up the app in the first place and attach it to the right plex account.
This is what the PINs are for.
The alternative is to use a completely separate plex.tv account, with an own email address and password.
Of course, this one then doesn’t get any of the Plex Pass-benefits of the server owner.
Agreed, a PIN/password would need to be used for a parent to unlock. For my case, I have six managed profiles (I only limit content on one of those). With the current set up, all of the other profiles would need a PIN to prevent my child from accessing content they shouldn’t. Setting up a PIN for parental controls is fine, but I don’t want to have to enter it every time I want to watch something, especially when watching on my phone (separate feature request would be to have the option to set a default profile on a device so you don’t have to keep selecting a profile when opening the app).
Or, alternatively, as you suggest, I could set up a separate account for either the other managed profiles or my child’s, but then, as you point out, I’d lose the Plex Pass benefits.
Thanks for the input!
Given there’s already an existing thread from last year discussing this very suggestion (with the very same workaround / currently possible solution)… I suggest you comment/vote in that thread if you still want this feature ![]()
For personal devices there is the “automatic logon” Plex app preference, which you can activate. It will memorize the last-used plex user account of a Plex Home.
(Only the admin of a Plex Home can activate it. So “Switch User” to the admin account to be able to see it.)
Thanks for letting me know! I did a search but didn’t see this one (must likely because it didn’t have the keywords I was using)
