Linux or Windows for HW transcoding with i7 3770?

Hi all! I’m upgrading my poor ol’ Celeron G550 with an i7 3770 that I have laying around which would handle Quick Sync for most of my content, but then I read QS is only supported on Windows? (Using Hardware-Accelerated Streaming | Plex Support)

My media server is setup on a Centos7, which I also use for some other stuff, and I wouldn’t really want to change that for a Windows. Is there any good reason I should consider installing windows for better HW transcoding? I only need 1x 1080p h264 transcodign at a time and the server doesn’t have a dedicated GPU.

Also, how much RAM would I need? It has 4GB but would be happy to increase that if it helps.
Same with the linux distribution, could easily change for Ubuntu if there’s any benefits. Would only consider Windows if there are any real performance benefits.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

QS is supported in Linux. My server works great with 8GB RAM.

Is VAAPI an equivalent to quick sync for linux? Because QS is only listed for Windows

Yes–VAAPI supports zero-copy transcoding via QSV ASIC
