So I recently finished encoding my very large Blu-ray library in HEVC. Works great for me since my primary client is an Xbox One which natively supports it, but I’m finding that all my family who I’ve shared my library with have to transcode everything on their various devices. Not a deal-breaker, but I could support more simultaneous streams (and their video quality would be better) if they could direct play my content.
Out of curiosity (in case I decide to gift them some new hardware), is there a list somewhere of all devices/Plex clients that can natively decode h.265/HEVC? Or better yet, a full table showing all supported codecs for each device that can run a Plex client?
its more a hardware restriction than a software one
pi2 with openpht will direct play hevc up to 720 but its hardware capped at that even though the settings in openpht will let you select 1080 or no cap if I recall
Several of the “ninjas” and I had an exchange about this topic. As it turns out, many devices are HEVC decoder compliant (a lot more than you might expect initially). In my case, I found that setting some configs and what not in the encoded HEVC file allowed for direct play in all of the devices that my family, friends, and I use. If you’re interested, you might want to take a look at my blog : http://satalink.blogspot.com/2016/10/ffmpeg-hevch265-tivo-bolt-direct-play.html … after some back and forth with plex ninjas, I’ve added a disclaimer … test it first!!!
