I wonder if Plex will be the first to tackle DRM and lead the Live TV/DVR and Media Center since Windows Media Center. Shockingly enough, the Live TV and DVR is working pretty well.
I’m unclear on this, but in short Plex DVR is best for recording network tv off an antenna isn’t it? If you wanted to record say Discovery Channel, Science or FX the DVR can’t do that correct?
The lingo I see on the subject is often in lingo I don’t find very clear.
Antennae acquired media, for the most part (all I’ve encountered) comes in free and clear.
Some Pay TV content (most of what you’d consider ‘valuable’) has DRM - The Untouchables.
The Pay TV Guy’s Mission is to ‘allow’ you to pay to watch advertising, live, as it happens. Any attempts to fiddle with that concept are thwarted by DRM.
There are ways to combat that situation. Some ways are simply to change the way you watch TV. Other ways are more ‘inventive’. Plex DVR isn’t included in any of these ‘alternate’ access methods, but Plex Media Server certainly can be.
Live TV via Plex DVR may be included in this scenario - as you aren’t really fiddling with the concept of paying to watch live advertising, but the DRM that sniffs out what they may consider a ‘fiddle’ could stop this in it’s tracks. This is the bit the general public should be made aware of, up front, not hidden behind a pay wall, so you only find out about it AFTER you have paid.
Personally the Pay TV Guys can pucker up and kiss my entire bee-hind. I changed the way I watch TV a long time ago. I get what hits my antennae free and clear. The other stuff is acquired via Netflix, Prime, or ‘Other’ and Plex Media Server plays a large part in that bit.
Thank Juice! A nice clear answer. Right now the DVR isn’t worth my time. Maybe if you like sports.
