Well to be honest I haven’t been able to watch an in progress recording for over a year now, so my flow is the same lol. But I would appreciate being able to start watching my nba games before midnight on the night they air.
I just gave up on Plex’s TV & DVR implementation…
Bought all the hardware, system, investment and had nothing but issue after issue…
cord cutting, not exactly…
It seems many have done the same
People just got fed up with bugs and the basics getting ignored
Recent changes just seem to show all Plex want to do is hide the bugs instead of getting to the root cuase of them
So i was correct… yes, either a hub or like most other dvr applications, you go into all your recorded shows and anything that is being recorded is labeled as being recorded. You know it’s still in progress by the icon, but you are allowed to click on it and catch up. You also have all your other shows in there as well. I don’t use the plex DVR that much but when I have, on the 2015 nvidia shield pro as the server/client, it has worked for me. However, I only basically watch football and I just use my HDhomerun for that… just seems a bit quicker.
Side note: is there a way to map 10 second skips to up and down arrows on the remote? This only skipping 30 seconds is fine for commercials… but skipping forward large chunks with only 30 seconds sucks.
@Scott-M There won’t be anything shown until you’ve picked something to tune. Once you are tuned, if you return to the guide, then you’ll be able to see the previously selected item.
We definitely want to improve the ability to access in progress recordings, including when they have extra padding at the end, but nothing to share just yet
I’m excited about all the fixes and improvements. It’ll be great to have the new player and the ability to chromecast live tv!
Please keep things civil. We’re working on EPG data independently of these items with our partner, but that’s not entirely within our control. What we’re sharing here are enhancements for all users, regardless of EPG data. Personally, I don’t have EPG data provided by Plex where I live, so I have to provide an XMLTV file for my own usage. These changes benefit all Live TV & DVR users, regardless of guide data.
Good for you ![]()
replies like some of these are why plex rarely makes threads like these.
What would also be a great improvement is if we could select the audio for live TV, would be great to be able to listen to the 5.1 audio.
Hey @chenks what country are you in? I’d be more than willing to pull your lineup and take a look. Any specific examples you could provide would be extremely helpful. Also, as far as this little chestnut that multiple users have stated as “fact”…
I can assure you that the reason we were forced to change providers was not because “we felt like it” or “to save a buck”. There is no going back, but we do have multiple initiatives underway to improve the guide data product, some of which involve continuing to work with our metadata provider, while others will be purely in-house endeavors.
Either way this thread was created in an effort to re-establish a dialog with our users, give you some insight into what we’ve been working on in the Live TV & DVR space, and hopefully get some constructive feedback (good or bad) to inform our future decisions.
I’m confident that we have the right people and resources in place on our end to make Live TV & DVR in Plex a fantastic experience, and we invite you to help us realize that goal.
As a lover of both television and Plex I’m intensely aware of the shortcomings and frustrations around Live TV & DVR functionality, many of us are, but throwing rocks isn’t going to get us anywhere. So help us, we’re here, we’re listening!
(This concludes my PLEX Talk, “Help me, help you”. Thank you, goodnight.)
Yep, and I’m very aware of the big issues there. Series sequencing, OAD’s, and channel realignments.
All good changes, good to see plenty of investment going on here :).
So I’ve got a few issues, but these are from a rather unique perspective, as they are generally from a XMLTV developer (although I also use DVR quite a bit!). For example sports filtering being completely broken on (seemingly) all platforms with XMLTV.
There’s also an issue, in that there appears to be a hard cap of 20 MB for XMLTV based guides (which is easy to bump up against when you have > 100 channels, 7-14 days of programming and a lot of metadata).
It would also be nice to be able to specify things like series descriptions (rather than just episode descriptions).
I’ve also got a question specifically pertaining to episode numbering. There’s a bit of a unofficial spec in the XMLTV dtd about specifiying IMDB, TMDB and TheTVDB ID’s, for example in NZXMTV, I do the following:
<episode-num system="themoviedb.com">tv/1657</episode-num>
...
<episode-num system="themoviedb.com">movie/2454</episode-num>
<episode-num system="imdb.com">title/tt0499448</episode-num>
...
<episode-num system="thetvdb.com">series/275413</episode-num>
Is this numbering used (e.g. in the enhanced guide), as if it is then I would be able to recommend to my users to enable enhanced guide to supplement the data I provide (since NZXMLTV is generally pretty good at matching to these databases)
There’s a few other things which I think would potentially make a better experience, for example channel categorisation, where I could specify if a channel was sports, movies, news, etc.
There also appears to be no options for specifying the genres which are considering kids (indeed the children’s hub doesn’t seem to display at all).
Another thing which might be quite a good differentiator for Plex would be handling of sports. It would be quite nice to have tie in with some sort of sporting database (or even google knowledge graph), so that fixtures and stuff could be mapped to a schedule for example. Or for teams to be displayed more prominently. Obviously that stuff is very complex, but it would be awesome to see.
I’m happy to provide feedback more anytime, as like I said, I might be able to share a somewhat unique perspective. But once again, thanks for you guys’ work on this, it is appreciated.
Edit: This is super niche, but it would be awesome to have a intergration with the TV Input Framework on Android TV, so that Plex could seamlessly blend with other apps (e.g. IPTV). I attempted to make an app to do this myself, but I don’t exactly have the knowledge around Plex to integrate this effectively (plus there was a few technical limitations around recording specifically).
I am in the UK, the same as @chenks
As an example, have a look at Pick TV during the morning (I am using Freeview North East line up, channel 011)
No S/E
Invalid Air date, all shows in the morning have the current date (today they all have 11/03)
I know the new changes get around the above causing issues, but the episodes do not even have usefull data, the guide just gives a generic show discription, so we have no idea what those episodes are about
These are quick examples i found by just looking at the epg
Thanks
If you’re not getting 5.1 audio, is it because Plex is transcoding? If the channel offers it, it should be available by default.
No it definitely direct plays. The channel has 3 audio streams, the first stream is stereo and that’s the one that Plex selects. There is no option to change it.
I’ve just fired up Plex now and it’s updated to the new player, the new player actually gives the option to switch audio streams! Although when I selected 5.1 it didn’t actually switch over to it, but it’s progress!
Loving the new player with the new controls and easy access to the guide!
I’m in NZ too and in the same position with the audio streams.
Also, it would be really useful to get the aired date displayed in the ‘on deck’ and library displays. For daily news shows all you get is something like “S2020 E37”. Most PVRs (e.g. Sky boxes) display the date and time of the recording in the library/planner view. In Plex you have to open the recording in order to see the aired date. Rather frustrating when you have a few days of news and current affairs shows in your library.
@chenks in NZ the EPG is actually copyrighted information (http://techliberty.org.nz/skys-takedown-notices/). So it’s sometimes difficult for 3rd parties like Plex to be able get and use EPG data.

Fellow XMLTV user here, and hopefully I can answer some of your questions!
I’m not sure about the 20MB hard cap, but I’ll ask about that!
For episode numbering, I’d recommend the following format:
<episode-num system="xmltv_ns">11.1.</episode-num>
<episode-num system="thetvdb.com">series/82548</episode-num>
<episode-num system="imdb.com">series/tt1055238</episode-num>
Your TMDB format looks fine too. We don’t currently utilise these kind of references, but we certainly are looking into it with some other changes we’re working on.
I’m not 100% on the kids or sports categories, but I’ll ask our engineering team about it (although they’re asleep now. Timezones!).
We definitely want to improve on how we display sports, and there are some great sources out there, but nothing to share at the moment, I’m afraid!
“we” have a thread about the categories issues on going here XMLTV (foreign) categories not used
Doesn’t work with xmltv file either until now.
