Live TV & DVR: Fixes and Improvements

Normally for Live TV, we have been using Channels due to its performance and have experienced no issues, and use Plex to record.
After hearing Plex LiveTV has had a face lift it was time to finally give it a go again as our main TV driver.

The positives:

  1. It looks great and easy to use. You’ve done a good job in that area.
  2. Love the PIP when viewing the guide
  3. ‘Direction Up’ for the Guide, and ‘Direction Down’ for previous channels is good also, and seamless.

The negatives:

  1. It’s still too slow when changing channels (6-8 seconds)
  2. When watching a channel, sometimes it will just stop/pause. You need to exit out of the channel and choose it again, or change channels
  3. Sometimes it stutters, but seems to settle down after a minute or two.
  4. HD channels fail to play when watching on a mobile device. This seems to be an Android OS issue, but thought I’d include it here for completeness:

It seems so close to being our daily driver, as we use Plex for all our media outside of Live TV. I will pursue it a little longer, but I don’t know how long it will take before the family gives up on it and we go back to Channels.

Channel switching is still only possible via the guide, isn’t it? Zapping with channel +/- does not yet exist right? At least on m Shield I haven’t found any key to do so.

I’ll have to try this again, but I attempted to do this on Saturday and wound up with a partial recording of 16 minutes instead of the entire 30 minute program.

Thanks! If you hit any issues, some logs would be much appreciated :plexheart:

There is a Roku client but it still remains in beta

Do you mean for Channels?

They killed it: https://community.getchannels.com/t/new-roku-app-for-channels-dvr-experimental/1675

You can still install it and use it, I have it running on a Roku 3 for my other half when she’s in the laundry room. You can also cast from Channels DVR to Roku.

Discontinued as “experimental” 3 years ago. Hardly beta, more like abandoned. I tried it last year, made a good product bad.

To be honest I gave up on buying any further Roku box’s years ago as it hasn’t really advanced in capabilities that much. Amazon stick is a better alternative these days.

Fire TV has it’s own list of issues, putting those too in the same basket is to be taken with caution.

The current Roku Premiere was probably the worst device ever from Roku Tried setting one up for someone before Xmas and they ended up sending it back after 3 days due to poor performance. They have had no real issues with the Amazon Stick in comparison, I have 1 myself and havn’t had any issues really other than it losing WiFi once.

Tuned to a channel and waited until the program started. Waited 20 minutes into the program and hit record. Recording finished, but the recording is only 39 minutes and not and hour. Also shows it is a partial recording.

Here are logs:

This was done from the web interface, however, this past Saturday I was doing it from a Roku. I will say that in both instances, the stream would have been transcoded. I can try again this afternoon watching from our Roku TV where the stream will not be transcoded. Not sure if that would have something to do with it our not.

We need a previous channel button.

So we can bounce between channels.

Thanks @Noah0504 for checking this out and providing the logs. This will be looked into to ensure we do include any buffered data.

I’d love to see some unification of the UX of TV programs between library and DVR.

If I record a program (the newshour, for example), I have to know that to manipulate the newshours’ recording settings, I need to go to the DVR section, not the TV section that holds the newshour. That’s silly - I should see that the newshour recordings are as a result of me recording them and be able to manipulate them.

From an information architecture perspective, I think there should be one tv IA with different sections that are either open or collapsed depending on how you got to it. If I access a TV show via the library, the dvr schedule, upcoming showings, etc are collapsed, but still available - the overall show metadata, season listings, etc would be expanded. If I access the show via DVR, the dvr section is expanded by default, while the metadata, recorded seasons, etc would be collapsed.

It’s both simpler for the user and easier to maintain because it’s one experience.

When I said “made a good product bad” I was referring to Channels DVR.

I know what you meant but frankly its Roku that is out of date technically…

I’m looking for a jump back button while in the middle of watching a channel.
