Live TV on iPad without transcode?

Plex noob here. I feel like I’m missing something obvious like a setting. My setup: hdhomerun extend recording to Drobo N2 NAS. I’m able to watch dvrd tv shows on my iPad without issue. I cannot, however, watch live tv. Gives an error saying there’s not enough cpu available to transcode. I know my Drobo can’t effectively transcode, that’s the point of the Extend doing the hardware encoding on the fly. I don’t understand how I can watch recorded tv but not live. Why is it trying to transcode what already plays natively? I’ve tried setting my iPad video quality to maximum and a couple other settings but that didn’t fix it. Any ideas? I have adjust quality automatically disabled as well. Screenshot attached.
Thanks!

I know it’s not a Plex solution, but HDHomerun just released a free app that allows you to watch live tv locally.

It doesn’t support iPad 2 and they have no plans to support. :frowning:

Good to know, anyways, Franco. Anyone else have ideas? It just seems like an odd problem that the same video is viewable in one context but not in another. it might just be my simplified understanding of the situation, but I’m hopeful to hear from someone who knows more.

The same is happening with movies. I’ve encoded movies on my Mac and then include them in my PMS. The files, as is, work just fine with my iPad. I can sync them via iTunes and they play. I can stream them over the network via Plex and then play. When I try to sync the file via plex, it wants to transcode. I have the sync video quality at highest/original. The file is an encode of a dvd. What am I doing wrong?

Encoding it differently works around the problem so I’ll just do that

Would prefer an actual solution, though.
