Live TV OTA Plex DVR Information

Server Version#: Version 1.21.3.4021
Player Version#: Version 1.27.2.1599-7689068b

Can a 1080p Live TV Sream be streamed from a 170Mbits Upload speed to a 10Mbits download connection without buffering when playing live TV? (1080p or 720p)

This will likely depend upon your server’s ability to transcode from 1080p MPEG2 to something which will fit in that download bandwidth efficiently. The 720p and 1080i broadcasts to which I have access range from ~11 to 20 Mb/s; 1080p will be even higher. And Plex (at least in my case) uses 39 Mb/s for its bandwidth calculations for live TV. So, to fit the available download bandwidth at the remote client, it will need to be transcoded.

This is alot of great information.

Thanks for helping me out.

So just to be clear, i need to transcode my live tv viewing on the remote station running @ 10Mbits download using the server which is more than powerful enough to do so to fit the download speeds and not get buffering problems. just transcode it on the remote system to any bitrate below 10mbits for remote playback right?

In your Plex client app settings, there will a setting for “remote” or “Internet” viewing quality. If the required bandwidth for the stream exceeds what is configured here, the server will transcode automatically. So, just ensure this value is set appropriately for your available bandwidth. Where it is located and what its exact name is depends on the Plex client you’re using. For example, in my iOS Plex app its under Quality -> Remote streaming.

I used the settings and got a steady stream of 720p 4Mbits on the 10Mbits remote client and ran pretty smoothly! Thanks for your help

No problem, glad it worked.
