Other issue I have is Live TV transcoding for no reason? My TV supports native mpeg-2 and even h.264. Whenever I try to watch my h.264, it transcodes to h.264, which causes tons of pausing an skipping unnecessarily.
That’s what transcoding does. If you don’t want that to happen, you can just convert to h.264 using e.g. Handbrake. If it converts h.264 to h.264, it is because the video resolution is too high for the TV or your Internet connection is to slow.
How do you know? What TV do you have?
Maybe just send us a mediainfo of the file…
And send us the setting of your app…
Thanks!
Because, it direct plays when I play something that has been DVR’d from my HD Homerun. However, Live TV (whether h.264 or mpeg-2) always converts. Even though I have it set to maximum (or original) bandwidth.
There could be other reasons, but I guess that’s not the point if the issue is with H264.
Please provide the PMS log when the transcode is happening so we can look into why.
I have it set for maximum bandwidth. My upload is 20 mb (more than enough for a live tv stream that is h.264…which averages around 4-6 mb/s).
Looking to do that. When I start it, is it ALL the log you want, or verbose, or…? Thanks again!
TV is Samsung UN55KU6300FXZA with Plex for Samsung version 4.25.2 and Tizen 2.4.0
No verbose. In the Samsung app there is an option to send logs to your server, enable that. On the server Enable debug, play the file, let it play for 30-60s. Stop playback, grab the logs.
I uploaded zip file. I made sure debug was on, and send log to server from tv was on, too.
My LG OLED does the same.
interesting? So it isn’t just Samsung Tizen related?
I reviewed your log. I see 2 issues. 1 - PMS is unable to identify the codecs used in the live stream. In this case, it has to transcode. 2 - I think this one is a bug. The transcode is using a really high bitrate for some reason. I’m looking into this to see if we can identify the cause.
Thank you for looking into this! My tuner is a HD Homerun Prime 3. Would think that it would just either be mpeg-2 or h.264 for the cable channels? Or mpeg-2 ts? My provider is Comcast and I know they switched their cable channels to mpeg 4 (AVC).
True but unless Plex knows which one, it might get it wrong and the client might not play correctly.
Any updates with the possible bug? Thanks.
I am seeing this as well. I have Emby as well (though I’ve moved to using Plex as my primary). Emby just plays live TV with no transcoding. In my case this is primarily happening on my Windows 10 hardwired computer. When I run Emby no transcoding is involved. It just plays… I can pause and everything on either product.
In the preview Tizen release, this has been rectified and works great now (Direct Plays straight to TV)…AND we get a grid guide!
