I was very happy today to see that the latest PMS update has support for local artist posters and fanart.
Looking through the support pages, I can find no mention of the new local artist posters and fanart feature. What is the expected naming convention for these new local assets?
Didn’t see information on local assets for music. New features mentioned are:
(Metadata) Support local artist posters and fanart.
(Metadata) Support local album fanart.
I take this to mean for music you can supply local:
- artist art
- artist background?
- album art
What would the keywords be for these?
artist - ‘poster’
artist background - ‘fanart’? ‘background’ ?
album art - ‘cover’ ???
There needs to be a support page for Music Libraries. Looking forward to using this feature.
There is currently no official documentation.
Activate ‘Local Media Assets’ under Settings - Server - Agents - Artists
Try these file names
...\Music\Pink Floyd\
artist-poster.jpg
artist-background.jpg
There may be other naming varieties which work equally.
Artist:
…\Music\Pink Floyd\folder.jpg
Album art:
…\Music\Pink Floyd\albumname\cover.jpg
Thanks for the reply @OttoKerner. I have my music organized meticulously as per the official documentation – as in “Pink Floyd - The Wall”. So will try adding the artist-poster.jpg and artist-background.jpg to the album folders.
How about the album specific fanart (not cover) mentioned in the release post?
Hopefully, a documentation page will be put up covering these assets.
I think the “Adding Music Media From Folders” page also needs updating since it lacks information on multi-disc albums (I’m aware it’s subfolders titled Disc 01 and so on – but still important info to have in the documentation).

I’m pretty sure you can use
fanart.ext
background.ext
art.ext
backdrop.ext
with .ext
being either jpg, jpeg, png or tbn
and put in in the album folder.

It will be done.
background.ext and artist.ext worked for me for the background art and artist poster respectively.
I took a flyer on ‘biography.txt’ but that did nothing for a band that has no bio.
I don’t know of a Plex metadata agent which can read textual metadata from a local text file.
I was searching for this question specifically, thanks @OttoKerner . What’s funny, is that the artist, jpg pull has been in the pms for at least a couple versions before 9.16, i discovered it by accident, but I’m glad it’s out in the open.
Yes, a part of it was already functional. But the ‘fanart’ support was just added recently.
@OttoKerner I wished they’d document it thou, it’s a little quirky to work with when I don’t know what the rules are.
