Looking at a Movie's cast and seeing what other movie they are in does not work properly

I have noticed a problem with my Bill Murry collection.

When I select “Ghostbusters (1984)” then go select cast “Bill Murray” it only shows 4 movies… The Ghostbusters series and Groundhog Day.

When I select the movie “The Limits of Control (2009)” go to Cast and select Bill Murry it shows 41 titles but Groundhog day is not there!

Is this a bug or something wrong with my setup? Are there other data base indexing problems with other actors and movies I am not aware of? Has anyone else noticed this?

Is it Bill Murray or Bill Murry?

Are all those movies in the same Plex library or did you create several movie-type libraries?

Where do these actor infos come from?
What is selected in the properties of the ‘Plex Movie’ agent as ‘Cast List source’?

Are all movies matched to the same metadata agent?
You can check that by looking at the Plex XML info. check the content of the guid="......." property.

I apologize for my awful spelling. It is “Bill Murray”
All the movies are in the same library folder and are scanned as a single unit.

Each title does properly list him as a cast member with his picture. They just don’t cross reference to all the movies he has been in.

I am unsure about the metadata agent. I make sure the movie name is cross referenced to IMDB and properly named before allowing plex to scan them into it’s library. It properly identifies all the titles and cast members. Just does not cross reference them correctly.

This is not something I want to check by hand. I don’t have the time or energy required. There are simply too many to double check.

It is sufficient to compare ‘Ghostbusters’ with ‘The Limits of Control’.

Only in the sense that he was a cast member in both movies. I like looking at cast members and seeing what else that actor has been in on my system.

It is a fun way to pick what next to watch.

Clint Eastwood is a perfect example of this.

Please compare the guid of ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘The Limits of Control’.

Ok. so the cast member other movie search only works if the movie is part of the same guid? Is there a way to reset everything so the cast member search works properly?

If I select Ghostbusters and then select cast member Bill Murray it shows “The Limits of Control” I guess I don’t understand. Could you explain further? I really appreciate your help on this. It is strange.

I am checking Clint Eastwood now for the same problem.
I checked Clint Eastwood and it seems to be good for every movie. Not sure why Bill Murray is like that.

No, I am merely trying to figure out the source of this disconnection between the two groups of movies.

OMG… you are good!
turns out it cross referenced into my 4k collection! The disconnect is when on a 4K title.

It some how links to the 4K library and does not link back. Is there a fix for this across different library folders? Why would it link to 4k but not back?

I have the following Libaries…

Movies
Movies 4K

I don’t watch 4k files much. They are almost impossible to stream.

Looking closer it does not jump into the 4k Library. I do when searching for a missing title I know he is in.

Is there a way to get the cast member search to be global and not to a specific library file? It would be great to see TV shows as well! Like Saturday Night Live Bill Murray!

That is what I was asking about above, whether the movies are in separate libraries or not.

If you click on an actor while browsing a movie from your ‘4K’ library, you will only see other movies featuring the same actor from your ‘4K’ library.

The only way to find all movies with a certain actor is to use the global search field on the top.

Ohhh… This process flow was not obvious. I would think you would want it globally all the time or have the option in setup to make it work that way.

That is unfortunately not possible in Plex.

I probably need to simply merge my 4k and regular movie library folders. I keep my 4k files in a separate library so I know better when selecting one on my iphone while in a airport with crappy wifi. Many of the 4k titles are duplicates but a few such as “Groundhog Day” are not. That was how I stumbled across this.

Maybe we can request this as a new feature to the system. Seems like it would make sense to click on Bill Murray and have your TV Library episodes of Saturday Night Live show up!

Thank you for giving me a deeper understanding of the software. Hopefully some day they will refine this process so it is more obvious and give some control and flexibility to the user. I don’t see me trying to explain this to my wife. She does not even know how to use the remote control!

The request already exists. Add your vote, please.

Thank You again! You are very knowledgeable and provide a great service for the community.

I just voted! on this topic.

I would encourage anyone who reads this to do the same. Go vote “because I want this feature added!” If you don’t vote you can teach your users how to do a global search!
