Looking for a good unmanaged MKV file converter

I’ve been combing the web all day and need some help. I am looking for a tool that will let me run as a background process, scan a specific folder, and seek out any video file that isn’t an MKV file and make a converted MKV copy with the same file name and no compression.

I can find things that will convert to mp4 all day long and I am aware that plex has this feature built in. But I am running plex server on a windows machine and nvdia shields for playback on my TV’s. MKV is the best format for me with what I am using. Most of my files are MKV and wanted to convert the one’s that aren’t.

I have been using ffmpeg to convert with a batch script, but it’s cumbersome trying to move files to a folder, run it and move them back…like to find something that is automated.

Thanks again

sounds like a waste of time.

anything that can play mkv, should be able to play mp4 without problems (typically mp4 is MORE compatible than mkv).

nvidia shield certainly doesn’t have problems with mp4.

besides, mp4 and mkv are containers, what matters is the codec inside (x264/x265/etc).

true about the compatibility, but I am ■■■■ like that and want to stick with one file, and not have a library of various file types. want the containers to be one type. There are more benefits to MKV for me and the purpose I need it for.

Just found a member here posted something this week that would prob work for what i need it for

An example of what would work is a 2-part system:

  • A shell script that remuxes input files into mkv
  • A cron job that runs the shell script once in a while.

Because you’re on Windows, I’m not sure what’s going to work, but as a starting point for my Unix conversion scripts (on a Mac), I use this.

When you set some defaults and tweak the script, it would do what you want.
