Looking for Apple TV 4/4K Beta Testers

other-third-party

#1

I've been working on an alternative client to Plex’s Apple TV app that I'd love to get some beta testers for.

Here’s a video of it in action:

If you‘re interested, you can sign up here to get an invite via Testflight: http://beta.getcatch.tv

Thanks!

As a lifetime Plex member, I applied to the official beta program, but never heard from them…

I run 5 Apple TV4’s on our local in-house LAN…

I’d love to help you out…

Regards,
Doug

@Badgerdog looks like you got it installed, let me know what you think!

I spent a considerable amount of time with the beta last night…

Sorry, I’ve been busy today at work, so I didn’t get a chance to get here and provide a lot of feedback. I will do that first thing tomorrow morning for sure…

A quick summary… Wow!!! :)>-

You’ve done a fantastic job with what I’ve seen so far. Plex IOS for Apple TV programmers should take some lessons from you in how to lay out the flow and intuitive use of particularly how the TV Shows interface is handled. LOVE the TV Guide forward look and all the date/time with episode numbers of what’s up and coming for each series. Fabulous touch…

I do have a couple of things for you to address which I’ll cover tomorrow, including the mouse pad use with the remote, which is hyperactive, for lack of a better description.

One quick fix is the spelling of LARGE under Sound Boost. You have it currently at LAGE …

If this is just your beta, I can’t wait to see what you do to develop this excellent interface further… thanks for letting me try it.

It has the potential to become my GO TO standard interface for use with Plex on all my Apple TV 4’s…

Regards,
Doug

Ok… another day… another dollar… 50 cents for some of us working in socialist countries like Canada … :frowning:

Anyway …

Besides the cosmetic spelling issue I covered in my last post, the two most important things that I think needs to be addressed relates to the mouse activity.

  1. For all mouse arrow movement around the screen, the thumb pad on the remote control seems to be too sensitive. I’m constantly having to adjust my tendency to over correct when moving between items, which I don’t seem to have the same problem with Plex’s official app.

  2. When in PLAY mode and the video is streaming, I can’t seem to make the pause and 10 second forward and back function to work consistently. Maybe it’s related to the mouse arrow issue in point #1?

Question: Have you altered the way this works as compared to Plex’s official app? It’s almost as if you need to hold down the remote mouse pad button left or right to get it to scan forward and backward through a video, but it’s so sensitive it either over shoots or under shoots most of the time. To be honest, I find it a real challenge to watch a video where I actually want to stop and move forward and backward.

That’s what I have so far, but again, I love this interface, so keep going with it… please !!!

Hope this helps … \m/

Regards,
Doug

Just signed up…I’ll check it out tonight and let you know…

@Badgerdog awesome, glad you’re enjoying it and thanks so much for the feedback!

I’ll definitely look into the issues with the Apple TV remote, I don’t use it (can’t stand the thing) and I can’t think of anything done specifically to change sensitivity, but I’ll see what I can do.

OK, I tried it last night, and here are the notes I took:

  • The top menu (with the library names) - can it stay active while I’m scrolling across it? Unlike the official Plex app, as I’m scrolling across, the selection jumps down to the left-hand menu. I have 6 libraries, therefore, if I want to scroll from the left-most library (Family Videos) all the way to the right-most library (TV Shows), I have to do this: Right-Up-Right-Up-Right-Up-Right-Up, which is more annoying than if the selection just stayed in the top menu and let me scroll right over to TV Shows.

  • Is there any chance of getting a ‘list view’ option for all libraries? I see that TV episodes are in list view, which is nice, but it’d be great to have an option to change Movies to list view.

  • in Movies, what is “Queue”? I can’t figure out what it is showing me.

  • I’m not getting posters on the main views. If I click into a subcategory in the left-hand menu, then posters display. Posters are also slow to load as I’m scrolling down.

  • Do you plan on adding Playlists, Channels, and Watch Later? I use those quite often…

Those were just some quick notes as I scrolled around the interface. I’ll try to use it like normal the next few days and let you know if anything else pops up.

Great work! Keep it up!

@phunkysai Thanks so much for the feedback, I’ll try to get these resolved.

Queue is unwatched movies sorted by most recent release date.

As for the poster loading issue, could you try changing the TV and Movie poster settings to “Plex” instead of TVDb/TheMovieDb and see if that changes things?

Also if you could send me your ISP, General Location and download speed it’d be helpful for me to debug why they’re not downloading (feel free to DM for privacy)

#11

I did change the setting to Plex but it didn’t seem to resolve the issue. I’ll check again tonight.

ISP: Charter
Location: Greer, SC
Speed: 60 mbps

Also the guide is a cool idea…is it supposed to be working? It’s not showing anything currently…

#13

@phunkysai hmm ok, your location/speed definitely isn’t the issue then. Guide should definitely be populated, sounds like there’s some networking issues going on, I’ll look into it

Hi …

It’s working for me here in Canada on EST Time Zone…

I do find that it takes time for all of the data, whether it be posters (I’m using Plex), or any of the content to be updated. However, I’m on a 5Mb DSL service and it’s not going to be as fast as 100Mb broadband etc…

Doug

I notice that if I scroll a TV Show just added line of shows to the right, once I get the end, it simply blows me out of the app back to the Apple TV main screen…

Doug

Registered a while ago but not receive note. Let me know if interested to have other test and for feedback. I see so much opportunity for a fresh approach to the client on the Apple TV !

#17

@gusestrella you should have gotten an email right away from Apple TestFlight

#18

I only had a minute to sign up and sign into Plex. I’m amazed at how fast it was to setup and load. Seems really quick? Are files specs anywhere? like the sound type (DTS) and video resolution (1080p)? Theme music and Rotten Tomatos meta, like Plex, would also be great.

#19

@itzme Haven’t gotten to that stuff yet, but it’s on my todo list!

Trickplay like ff and rew is better than Plex using my universal remote, I’m impressed. Playback quality seems excellent. I don’t do a lot of tv shows, just a few, but I was able to grasp how the tv Guide works, and I had no idea how handy that could be,seeing the air dates and the futur air dates.

Do you plan to support audio passthrough or DTS? is there a way to set Just Added as my default Movies view? As my default View upon entry? What is the data used for Watch Now? I’ll admit I’m a little confused about what happens when I check or uncheck Media Stacks options in Settings.

I hope to keep testing!
