Having a massively frustrating issue with the Plex desktop player and editing track info. First up, when all my music tracks were shown on the Player, all of the ID3 tag info was incorrect. It seemed to take one random Artist Album name, Album Name, Track Title, & Artist and enter these for every single track I have in my collection. I have checked the ID3 tags on the mp3s themselves and they for the most part have correct information.
A few weeks ago I decided to go through each of my folders and correct the data on each track so when I play them elsewhere I know what track is playing. Today after editing hundreds of them, the screen flickered a bit and loads of the tracks had lost some or all of the info I had edited myself.
Is there any way to get the track info to properly transfer from the ID3 tag on the mp3 file?
If not how do I edit the track data and be safe in the knowledge that it wont just disappear for no reason?
I have created 2 other topics since I started using the service a few months ago and have not had one reply. I am getting really frustrated at this point
albums with different “album artists” are not stored inside the same ArtistName folder
tracks from different albums must end up in separate AlbumName folders
If you use embedded meta tags, use the designated, separate meta tag to store the “disc number”. Never append “Disc x” to the content of the “Album” meta tag.
Various Artists/Sampler-style albums must follow the same folder structure as regular albums. The only difference is that the “Album Artist” is (usually) called “Various Artists”
If have an album where even just one track has a different content in its “Artist” meta tag, you must give every track of that album an “Album Artist” meta tag, which identical content in it.
Make sure that all tracks of an album have a “Track Number” meta tag (with sensible content)
The above folder structure is absolutely required, there is no workaround.
Thanks for the reply Otto, I really appreciate it.
I think I understand the explanation, I need to have my music folder in a specific layout for Plex to tag each track correctly.
What about when I edit track data and after a while a lot of the data I had inputted disappeared? Image below, all of the track titles were manually entered but a lot of them (not all of them as you can see) have vanished. Are they gone for good or is there a way I can retrieve them?
Never edit that extensively inside of Plex.
Always commit your edits to the embedded meta tags of your files.
And try very hard to find the album on musicbrainz.org . Because if the album exists on there, Plex can “match” the record on musicbrainz to your files.
And the track titles never vanish from albums which have been matched.
