I am unable to get a clear modern answer on this. When I do a sync on my iOS device, what is syncing and what is being converted and what is it being converted to?
I have FLAC files on my PMS, when I do a sync it appears they are converting, but to what? I noticed very little space being taken up when syncing 1800 songs which leads my to believe they are being downsampled.
Do I need to convert to ALAC to get lossless sync? And if so does it downsample?
Sync is an old feature and needs to be updated. Currently, it does not take into account a modern devices actual capabilities so FLAC files cannot be synced as-is. They are indeed converted. Previously they would convert to MP3, but recently that changed to use opus.
I would be using it with headphones. I have a 256GB iPhone and holds all the music I have and I don’t always have good enough cell connection to stream Hi-Res and I don’t have a business cable account for reliable upload speeds.
I am familiar with OPUS but just like MP3 what is the quality of those OPUS files? And does it turn all music files into OPUS? Like MP3 128kbps, 256, 328 etc. The OPUS codec goes from 6 to 510kbps.
It only uses opus when it needs to transcode. Which is needed for ALAC and FLAC. If you already have mp3, they can be synced as-is. When transcoded (both streamed and synced), it will use 128 kbps. Read that article I linked. It discusses the quality of opus. opus has better quality than mp3 and 128kbps is virtually indistinguishable from anything higher, so 128 kbps opus should sound as good if not better than 320 kbps mp3.
