Lost Plex data

Hi everyone,

I have a collection of over 150K tracks, and I spent time fixing the cover arts for the artists, and created about 10 playlists. There was an issue with my music files few days ago, half of my music files were deleted by mistake so it took us a few days to get everything back in. Not sure why or how this happened but now most artists are missing covers, and other then 1, playlists are there but empty. My guess is Plex auto updated itself while the files were gone, and once they were restored to their original location (no name or path changes), they got re-added to the library as new.

Any way to get my playlists, cover arts for artists back?

Also going forward how can I auto backup Plex database, and restore if something like this happens?

Thank you!!

You can try to restore an old database backup. But if you waited already several days, the graphics files might be gone already.

Never, ever fix such issues in the Plex server.
Always update embedded meta tags in your music files, improve file names and folder organization and add cover art as external files.

You can try to use this: PSA: Script to back up and restore Plex app data on a Windows system

Thank you Otto!

I think I got the playlists back but looks like Artist artwork is gone. There are number of albums for each artist, and when we sort by artists most images don’t show. I don’t know how to add artist photos via embedded meta tags, I can do album artwork but that’s about it.

Artist photo via embedded tags is not supported in Plex.
I also recommed to do album art not via embedded tags, but via “sidecar” file.

Thanks again, I’ll read up those resources.

Otto I found, and restored an earlier database. It was from 4/26 (day before problems began). This brought back the playlists! Problem is though, now we have ton more artist covers missing. So I went ahead and put the more recent database back because dealing with that many missing artist photos would be a nightmare.

Any ideas on how I can grab just the playlists from the old db?

Sorry, no. This would require direct database editing.

You could try to use [REL] WebTools (Unsupported AppStore) to export the playlists from the older database and import them into the newer one.
