Mac and External Drive

I want to rip my DVD collection and have access to them via Plex. I have a Mac. Is it as simple as buying an external DVD drive and external hard drive, ripping the DVDs to the external hard drive and then plugging the hard drive into the USB port in my router? If so, would quality and playback speed be fine without any buffering issues? Thanks.

It is that simple, but keep in mind if using Catalina you need to give permission for Plex to access that drive via the Security & Privacy Preference pain in System Preferences.

You will also have to catalogue your drive, with departments of which Library.

Example:
Movies
Television
Videos
Photo’s
Music

It is also important to follow the correct Naming conventions.

Now for using the USB Port on your router that solution is normally used for DLNA, I believe you will need to turn off the DLNA service in that router. then point to the drive within Plex.

I would make sure the USB port on your router is USB 3. (probably is but should make sure) if you have A USB3 thumb drive laying around you could test with with that. The Plex Media Server is free so you can check yourself if everything in your equipments chain is fast enough.

So correct Big wheel, also be beware some External dives sustained read and write speeds vary. Like some of the USB portable drives, powered USB 3 desktop drives work well with Plex.

The back of the router doesn’t specify if it is USB3. This is the router I have.

I would suggest doing like Big wheel said and try a Thumb drive first to see how it plays or email Cisco support for USB specification verification.

I’ve read elsewhere that people have had issues using Xfinity routers. Has anyone experienced issues or should it work without any problem?

I finally got an external DVD drive. I have ripped two movies and successfully uploaded them to Plex Media Server which I am just running on my laptop for now. I was able to successfully play the movies on my TV using Plex app run on my Amazon Fire Stick.

I won’t be able to fit all my movies on my laptop, but if I just buy an external hard drive will that work the same as how things are working now with the movies on my laptop? Assuming the laptop is on and the external hard drive is connected to the laptop.

If so, this seems like the easiest and cheapest way to digitalize my DVD collection.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

I connected my external HD to my Xfinity router, but Plex isn’t able to access the content. I have Xfinity Advanced Security disabled. What else do I need to configure? Do I need to set up a port forward? I couldn’t find where to do this. If anyone has a similar configuration (HD connected to Xfinity router) and can include screenshots of their configuration that could be helpful. Thanks.
