Wow, got it to work and just tested it. It works so well!! I wasn’t expected good results as I tried ComSkip with some EyeTV recordings and it wasn’t accurate at all but this was spot on, I couldn’t have done it better myself - even if I’d combed through each frame!
Thanks so much for the guide, and to the people how put it all together. Amazing!

Hi kettykrueger. Do you mean that it did not work well on the EyeTV recordings but did work well with the Plex DVR? That gives me hope that the eyeTV recording test that I ran was not a valid test for the comskip for me too.

How long did it take to perform the commercial removal after the recording ended. I just tried on an SD recording and it disappeared from the recording schedule and has yet to appear on the appropriate folder after about 5-10 minutes
Not actually done it on scheduled recording yet, I’ve just been doing it on my old recordings.

Kettykreuger any chance you could provide me your PlexComskip.conf setup and what you have pasted into the Plex DVR post processing window so I can troubleshoot? I also could not find the log file to see what went wrong (it was not in the library/logs folder). I am sure I am missing something easy that I screwed up. I also tried it on a recording that had been made by plex by running it form the terminal and it did not remove the commercials, although it indicated it was processing it and saved the processed file.

Did you paste the full file path? You can get the full path by two-finger tapping on the file, then holding ‘alt’, then select 'Copy xxxx as file path.

Solved the problem by moving the INI file to where it was looking for it. Just recorded two shows at once and both had commercials removed. Thanks all for the help and especially to Isaacrdz for the excellent setup guide!
just noticed an unusual blip in this otherwise excellent post prcessing commercial removal. i had two back to back Simpsons episodes set to record (same channel) both recorded fine, but only the second episode had the commercials removed, the first was untouched. has anyone else noticed this behavior?
Not sure if anyone is interested but I have a postProcessing Script that works with comskip and Handbrake. It first removes the commercials then it tests the file to see if it is greater than 720p. If it is greater than 720p I assume it is 1080i (CBS is 1080i in my area) and then converts to 720p, de-interlaces/etc so it doesn’t suck on my apple tv and other devices. If it is 720p no conversion necessary. All of this assumes that you have comskip, plexcomskip, and other tools compiled on your mac. It is a work in progress but may give some folks an idea of how to tweak their own. Let me know if you are interested and I will post it on my website.

Hey Chris, yeah that would be great if you could post a link to the script for us to give it a try

You can generally follow the Building from GitHub instructions to build Comskip. The main thing is changing directory so you are in the Comskip directory. You can do this easily if you’re not sure by opening Terminal, typing cd, adding a space, and dragging the Comskip folder to the Terminal window and pressing Enter. Once there, run each of the commands listed:
$ ./autogen.sh $ ./configure $ make
The binary files, comskip and comskip-gui, will be built and appear in the Comskip folder if no errors were encountered, although you may get warnings during the build which is fine. You can move these two files to your /usr/local/bin folder to make them easier to access in the Terminal, but that is up to you. Comskip-gui is not really needed. It is just a version of comskip that gives you a visual frame by frame analysis in a window as it runs.
I notice that the config.log file does contain these lines:
configure:3738: checking whether to enable donator features
configure:3744: result: yes
Is there a way to re-do the file as well afterwards? I don’t want Plex transcoding it - too CPU intensive. Can I do it afterwards with this script after it cuts the commercials?

Yes via a script. Take a look at mine to give you some ideas. I use Handbrake to convert to 720p but you could modify it to do anything really.

lol to death over these Mac/Windows people! Learn to use the command line and a real operating system without a mouse!
Lol. I guess you use something like Gentoo? I mean if you are going to forgo a mouse then you might as well go all the way. No need for repo’s or nice package managers… just go get the source and compile
