MacOS Sonoma increased audio resolution! (Apple Silicon)

Just upgraded to MacOS Sonoma, and to my surprise it has increased audio resolution in the output settings! Previously the max available was 6 channel 48khz 24 bit integer, but now the full 192khz 24 bit 6 channel is available for Apple silicon!

So a nice upgrade for hi-res audio with Plexamp, and hopefully this is a step forward to true audio Passthrough on Plex HTPC. Very nice Apple!

Interesting, I suppose 8ch are also supported? Is 16bit also an option?
8ch@16bit@192khz would be required for HD-audio passthrough.

Yep 7.1 (8 channel) is also supported. To clarify the max available to me is 6 channels at 192/24 because my setup is 5.1 at the moment.

And yep 192/16 is also an option for me. But unless I’m mistaken you’d want to stick with 192/24 for hi-res audio and HD audio passthrough. I know hi-res music files are always at 24bit and not 16. I believe the same is true for HD audio formats as well?

I work in music so doing any kind of mastering or engineer work we always work with at least 48/24 or 96/24. 192/24 is usually overkill for music these days but sometimes it’s required. 16bit is usually what’s used for CD quality instead of hi-res audio.

I was privy to check out the mix session for the Gravity movie a while ago and as I recall, the master resolution was 192/24 for that as well. So who knows!

Edit: seems The DTS-HD formats use 96/24 bit resolution as per this article here All About the DTS 96/24 Audio Format

Yes, absolutely! (or more precisely, the output should match the content values)

For HD audio passthrough (truehd/dts-hd master audio 16 and 24bit) however the bitstream is streamed over an 8ch@16bit@192khz link.
