Many Bugs. Slow Plex Menu's, laggy playback

i have to confess, i’m pretty damn annoyed from Plex for around 2 Years now.
I personally think there are so many little bugs around the whole ecosystem that there is no way to solve this easily. especially since @ChuckPa already read a few of my PMS logs the last days - one big one should have shown up more clearly? but i’m willing to let me proof better.

  • 1 week ago Plex kicked me out of my own server ((BUG) No access anymore. Server still running - #6 by snickers_1) (okay, it’s solved. but still… what the heck?!)
  • Plex/Web(at least) maxing out at 2mbps (Remote streams max out at 2mbps - #28 by ChuckPa)
  • Android(+TV) takes years to load (20-30 sec without crashing… but can load to crash after 2 min) ((BUG) Plex for Android goes crazy. Menu takes up to 20-30sec loading)
  • sometimes even PHT/Web takes long to load (but even than much faster)
  • items matched correctly - but 30% of the time metadata needs multiple (1-4) times manually refreshing (i read the troubleshoot - no success)
  • skipping on Android results many times in complete freeze → PMS drops connection.
  • skipping backwards on Android/LG/Samsung/iOS/Roku makes no fun, since there is not even the smallest backward-buffer …?! okay, not a bug… but still… why? higher chances Android crashes

any of these problems are repeatable - and will repeat (over and over again).

PMS runs on a 7700k with quick-sync enabled (Plex shows “hw”), Plex-dedicated-NVMe-SSD, 64GB DDR4 and a 1Gbit/s full duplex. Everything runs super fast and smoothly, except for Plex.

btw. where is the “optimize database” button in the new WebUI? … altough its checked at scheduled tasks.

The slowness implication is networking as there is nothing implicating anything else.

is the server on wifi or wired?
are the players wifi or wired ?

What is the topology?
I see WAN devices being played

Yeah, this sounds like a situation I ran into: Whenever I tried to pause/RW/FF a specific video, it would start over instead. I was convinced it was the file, since MPC struggled to handle it too, with slightly different symptoms. So I used FFMPEG to change the container from MKV to M4V, but left the video and audio intact. Boom, it worked fine afterward. Sometimes it’s just a file problem.

it’s a hosted server with wired connection. Speedtests are average of 900MBit/s Download and at least 600 MBit/s upload. Slow Menu’s even connected through 400MBit/s home-connection.
I checked everything… netdata, speedtests etc. … nothing…

To be clear, the real problem is PMS-Library/Database. Not the Streaming/Playback part.
Altough i should say, i’m using rclone and googledrive. But when streaming directly from googledrive (at home network without plex), it’s running hyper fast. 4K, 20GB and it’s feels like a local file (skipping etc). Day and night compared to using Plex. Same for streaming files located directly on the Server.
Plus nothing really changed speedwise compared to not using rclone back in the days.
Plus i can’t count how many people in rclone-community uses this exact setup…
Plus why does Menu’s load that slow? The Database is not on GoogleDrive, of course, but again, on a NVMe-SSD …

Most of my Players (like the Shield i talked about) are wired-connected (of course new Versions of FireTV and Roku have only wifi). But my Wifi runs perfectly anyway, since Ubiquiti does a great job with Unifi.

The file from log is just a broken mkv … VLC can’t play the file aswell (even downloaded local). nothing too special here

trust me… i checked everything… compared everything… talked to rclone-community, talked to my server provider, double and tripple checked everything on my server, speedtest on server, speedtest on homenetwork, speedtest on googledrive (from home and server). Upgraded even from HDD to SDD.
Plus this is not consistant. One time the Shield loads the Movie-Library in litarelly 0,5 sec (like right now), another time 10-20 sec and another time 1-2 till crash.

I forgot to say that my Library has 18,829 items and the database is 500GB+… too much to handle? Too many Agents = too many Posters? I don’t know. What is a big library in your eyes?

AndroidTV Logs while having the errors. maybe this helps

If your Plex database is on an NVME SSD system, and you’re complaining about the slow database time?

How much media do you have Indexed? Have you optimized the DB ?

NVME will deliver 1.6 GB/sec read.
SATA-3 will deliver 535 MB/sec read.

On an i7-7700 system, with all 4 cores (8 threads) , with SATA-3, PMS can load up and display 700+ or music albums in about 5 seconds. (my local QNAP)

I fail to understand what is wrong with your hardware unless you don’t have all the CPU resources you should.

As a side note: Most televisions are limited to 100 Mbps through their network adapter.

is that a typo? the size of your .db file is 500GB?? or do you mean the size of your plex media not database? or did you mean MB not GB

I forgot to ask that too.

Is the size of your metadata directory 500+GB or did you mean something else (typo / actual DB file) ?

the plexmediaserver folder is 500GB+
/mnt/PlexLibrary ext4 54% (503.41 GB) 937.89 GB /dev/nvme0n1p1

“optimize database every week” by scheduled tasks. I have no clue where the button is in the new UI (to do it manually).

One possible reason for that size is the number of database backups (the physical DB).

Can you please go to /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases and if you see anything with a YYYY-MM-DD formatted suffix, these are backups.

You can delete all but the most recent one.

They look like this

[chuck@lizum Databases.337]$

You can see here, with all my indexed media, each is only 50 MB.

I suspect the size of your metadata directory is because you have all your media chapter image indexed (a screenshot from every file at every chapter marker in the movie / episode). These are BIG files.

right

“You can delete all but the most recent one.”

Foldersize is still 759mb

Less than 1 GB to manage all your indexed media. This is a problem?

it’s “ncdu” way of listing the size inside a folder.

/mnt/PlexLibrary ext4 54% (503.41 GB) 937.89 GB /dev/nvme0n1p1

Just wanted to make clear, that this is much more than your’s.
Database-file 80mb vs 270mb … Are Databases with that size tested enough? Is it possble that the Database is corrupt somehow ?

Sadly deleting the backup files did not help…

Another thing; is symlinking the pms-directory to another (local)drive an issue? Or is the override.conf the better way?

LOL … freaking database …

Seems plex is not well optimized for power-users

my database file is 266MB so similar to yours, no preformance issues at all

thanks for info.
thought that aswell.
but i found a thread issuing the exact same behavior.
it seems it’s all about how many items are added on a daily basis.

okay… not solved

its just too many bugs to solve it as simple as optimizing the db …
