Media Distorts Every Few Seconds Randl

Hey Guys -

I’m a long time Plex user and currently run PMS 1.13.9.5439 on a Windows 10 x64 system. Most playback is performed on the same system as PMS, on another LAN-connected PC, or a couple of LAN-connected Raspberry Pis running RasPlex, and sometimes mobile devices.

Recently, I ran into an issue where during playback on all devices including local to PMS; the audio (and sometimes video) distorts for about a second - sometimes dropping out altogether. After that second, it resolves itself although it takes ~3 seconds to do on the RasPis. This occurs randomly every 15-120 seconds. Below are some tests I’ve performed with results, what I’m thinking of now, and system specs.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Tests I’ve Performed

  • Reboot host: No change
  • Played different videos / formats / resolutions: Exists in all of them with no real difference in the effect or timing of it
  • Scanned Media Files: Used the multiplexer in MKVToolNIX to reprocess a couple of titles which usually resolves errors. No change
  • Playback in VLC: I attempted playback of the same titles I’m testing with in VLC. The errors still occurred, but seemingly recovered much faster - perhaps due to limited transcoder settings used in PMS
Resource Usage: I always monitor resource usage as my PC is multipurpose, but during playback everything is at 50% usage or lower (CPU, RAM, GPU)

Current Thoughts of Cause

  • Drivers? Doubt this as no drivers have been updated recently besides video (Nvidia) and would be surprised if related to that as audio is also affected
  • Codecs? I’ve used codec packs in the past, but haven’t ever installed them in my current build nor recently installed / updated any media-related apps beyond PMS updates
  • Recent PMS Update Bug?: I am a Plex Pass member, am subscribed to the Beta channel, and currently running 1.13.9.5439. Has anything like this been reported? Yes, I did test with VLC, but perhaps the update included something system-wide like an updated codec?
