Media server stuck on "Starting"?

"A problem has been detected with a core component" is always PMS, and is 99% of the time solved by deleting the System.bundle and Framework.bundle

Well somehow it did not work. Furthermore new update somehow made any attempt of cleaning everything and downgrading also not working. I am going to clean once again. I already lost all my database so makes no difference and I am going to install new spanking fresh latest version, then I am going to post errors from logs. So hopefully somebody can tell me why my Plex completely crashes after update.

Here are errors from 9.9.10.458 version. I cleaned and downgraded in hope to restore Plex, but stuck on starting again.

Should really go for 0.9.11.1 rather than  0.9.9.10 but if upgrading to 0.9.11.1 need to go via 0.9.9.14 as there were issues with database schema migration. So install 0.9.9.14 and run for 10 minutes then upgrade 0.9.11.1

As mentioned by Atrus most such problems with the system/framework plugin is resolved by resetting the 2 bundles. In few cases that does not work and often it is because of some extra add-on products / security settings - so things to check:

- if proxy software installed

- vpn

- privacy add-on products

- other security products

- firewall

Logs to be checked out are those in PMS Plugin Logs as well as the Plex Media Server.log - I normally ask for a zip of a copy of the PMS Plugin Logs and the server log file (zip of a copy because found zip of folder whilst files are open results in current open files being skipped)

So where do you want me to send log files? I did fresh install of newest version and plex is still stuck with error message.

you can zip and upload here and myself and others will have a look and indication of the time the error was given

Use 'More Reply Options' button to attach zip. Make sure zip has current log files (as well as the .1, .2,.3 etc for the PMS Plugin Logs)

You will need to say what security and privacy third party products are in use and what settings you have in the firewall for Plex Media Server

You will need to also indicate if any proxy or vpn software is in use

Also you should make sure only 1 active network interface on the server

Hello,

I'm having a similar problem and I just approved the automatic update a week or so ago.  In the menu bar the server says it is starting but never does.  When I choose to quit, I get the confirmation dialog and click ok, then the application freezes up and I have to launch activity monitor to force quit it.  I tried deleting those files, manually downloading and installing the new version, and repairing disk permissions all to no avail.  Any suggestions?

Thanks

What version were you updating from ?

I Had automatic updates turned on, but it must not have.  I just restored from my oct backup in Time Machine and it worked, (9.8.18) so I'm downloading the prior versions and see if the incremental upgrade works.

Do not use update process. Go directly to plex.tv/downloads and manually download. You can subscribe to that forum topic to be notified of new releases. You will hear about PlexPASS releases as well which you can ignore whilst you are not a PlexPASS subscriber

To upgrade from 0.9.8.18 you must go first to 0.9.9.14, run for 10 minutes or so to get the database schema updated and then upgrade to 0.9.11.1

There is a 'Previous versions' link on the download page

That worked :)  I never subscribed to plex pass because there aren't any features I needed but after the holidays I will just to support this great software.

Thanks

It depends.. Did you upgrade Plex Media Server from a version earlier than 0.9.9.14 ? If you did, the answer is already given in this topic in the posts above yours

If not, see Reporting Issues with Plex Media Server

havent done anything,!!! should i restore from a backup and then go from there?

havent done anything,!!!

So you did not upgrade to Yosemite and did not update to the latest PMS?

ah, yes yosemite. did do that, have i missed something?

ah, yes yosemite. did do that, have i missed something?

Did you also update to the latest PMS? Which exact version are you using?

So here are my Plex logs. 11/22 are the last ones. Let me know what is going on. Before last update my plex was working fine for 2 years.

I'm using  0.9.11.1.678-c48ffd2 if that helps

no idea what imdoing, just a user got no clue about how it all works, sorry!

did you see the link to the support page about debug log files in my earlier response

So my plex was working perfectly fine until last update. New version it's giving me "A problem has been detected with core component of Plex Media Server", nothing works not reseting server setup from scratch, nothing on cleaning caches, nothing on resetting system and framework bundles. Even if I completely clean the whole Plex install and try old version (any version) then it's just stuck on "starting".

So pretty much after trying last version in update, none of versions work. Any ideas?

Thanks for the zipped Logs & PMS Plugin Logs folder

Well something changed on 16th November. You were running on PMS 0.9.9.7

The last activity by the system / framework bundles was

2014-11-16 10:52:31,053 (107c01000) :  INFO (storeservice:358) - All plug-ins are up to date
2014-11-16 10:52:31,054 (107c01000) :  DEBUG (runtime:1144) - Scheduled a timed thread named 'auto_update_thread'
2014-11-16 10:52:34,989 (10956f000) :  INFO (datakit:131) - Saved the dictionary file

and what should have happened next is a check for updates to the plugins about 6 hours later

There is a gap in log files. We have server log files created 17 November at 05:23 when you did a fresh install (ie wiping out old database and bundles) for PMS version 0.9.9.10

A new database was installed
[/Users/hope666/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases/com.plexapp.plugins.library.db]
from
[/Applications/Plex Media Server.app/Contents/Resources/com.plexapp.plugins.library.db]

There were a couple of warnings

But I have seen such warnings before and probably not important.

and the problem which remained the same for all subsequent attempts is failure for the system/framework bundles to start

I do not know why the system bundle is failing to start running. May be what is required is to start Plex Media Server from Terminal as was done for other cases before in this thread ?

Did you install any 3rd party products on 16 November ? Security / Privacy products?

I will leave this for Atrus to follow up
