I’m new to this and planning the server architecture and the purchase of a new machine. Currently I have an underpowered synology NAS {DS214} on the network that could work as simply storage for media files.
Does PMS require that all media be online and local to the server, or can the media files be available on a wired network? Please advise.
I’m pretty sure the server and the media files have to be on the same network. There might be a way to use files from a different network but with the cloud.
How I have mine setup is I run my server on my Windows PC that’s always on and add media library files from my Synology NAS. They are hard wired and on the same network.
Many people keep files on a NAS and run PMS on another system. The Synology supports both SMB and NFS, so no problem to run PMS on a separate Windows or Linux system and keep your media on the DS214.
Running PMS on a separate system is not a bad approach. If/when you want to upgrade PMS, you replace just the PMS system, not the entire NAS.
Just make sure you connect both to the network via hardwired Gigabit ethernet. No wifi allowed for PMS network connections.
