Just switched ISP and remote access stopped working. Is there a simple solution for fixing this. I know it has to do with the NAT and IPV6. Im semi decent on computers but this one has me stumped. Is there an easy guide for metronet out there? Ive seen other guides for this problem with different isp but I can not follow it.
Metronet has been rolling through out by me, don’t know when or if I’ll be able to switch (probably not until I relocate homes) but I did the research on them a good while ago. I was always under the impression that they don’t provide residential customers with their own public IP, not even a DHCP IP. When you have Comcast, AT&T, Cox, Mediacom, etc., your modem is handed an IP from a DHCP server on their end. That IP is specific to your modem, and you are then able to port forward for Plex. Metronet doesn’t hand out IP’s to modems, so instead, multiple residential’s will share an IP, but their individual traffic will be NAT’ed. Working in IT and networking, hearing that Metronet NAT’s their customers, I was under the impression that you would need to request a static IP from them for an extra $10/mo. Seems like a no-brainer cost, considering other ISP’s like the Comcast I am on, only provide 50mbps up on their gig plan, and we have to pay an extra $50/mo for unlimited data, on an already more expensive service than Metronet. Like you mentioned, there are guides out there of people getting around the NAT with equipment, but personally if I made the switch to Metro, I’d automatically grab a static IP as I know that would behave just like my previous ISP’s.
I’m switching to metronet too. But I’m not getting a static IP. I don’t remote stream, we only stream our library locally here at home. I even have remote disabled.
But dang…I just finished read reviews for an hour on Metronet and some of them are horrible. Some great. Mostly to do with Metronet destroying people yards or their wifi dropping their speeds drastically.
