Trying to fix a specific Remote Access/Double NAT situation

Server Version#: 1.26.0.5715
Player Version#: N/A

I run my PMS on a 2012 Mac Mini 2.3GHz i7 with 16 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD.

My apartment building has a new ISP (I currently have Spectrum) and the hardware they provide is just an Access Point.

I have no ability to edit any settings of their box, put it in bridge mode, or get a static IP.

I have an Orbi mesh router that I want to continue to use. When I plug the new ISP’s router in, I lose remote access (double NAT).

I’ve read about a lot of fixes but given the constraints I listed above, I don’t think any of them work for me. I tried putting the Orbi in bridge mode but unless I screwed something up, that didn’t work for me.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks!

It depends, but quite possibly not. Apartment-shared connections can be unforgiving.

What IP address does the Orbi get on its WAN/Internet interface?

Does it start with 192.168.x.x, or 10.x.x.x, or 172.16-31.x.x, or 100.x.x.x?

Does the address differ from Your IP at https://canyouseeme.org/ ?

Yes, it starts with 192.168.x.x (I reserved a specific # for the Mac Mini) but a different address shows up from canyouseeme.

Also, when I open Plex, it thinks my Public IP is one thing (a 3rd IP address) but canyouseeme and speedtest say it’s something else.

Yeah that’s a bad thing. It means you’re behind lots of layers of NAT.

Plex Relay will still work but direct access won’t.

If you get an IPv6 address Plex works pretty well with Apple clients.

I had once set up a Dynamic DNS Service over Dynu.com and plugged the URL it gave me into the “Custom server access URLs” on my server but that doesn’t seem to be working.

Someone on Reddit suggested setting up a Cloudflare tunnel but I am not super confident I could get that working (and not even certain that would solve my problem).

There are a variety of tunneling options, but they require some level of care and feeding.

Have you spoken to a human being at the ISP? Usually apartment management is useless.

I did. They originally said maybe they could give me a static IP, but later said they couldn’t.

“We want to inform you that double NAT is known to happen with our network and cannot be solved as we do not offer static IPs at this time.”

I really want to switch because this company offers great upload speed. But if it kills my PMS … what’s the point?

Appreciate the help, but it’s starting to look like I’m SOL.

The one thing I keep thinking of … the DNS thing might work but I think port 32400/1 is unreachable. Maybe the ISP can open it up for me?

Your IP is not public and that is your problem - dosent matter if it is static or dynamic.

You need a real IP address to use Plex outside our own network.

I turned off split tunneling on my VPN so now the IP address matches in Plex and on canyouseeme (the internal IP is still a 192.x.x.x number). Feels like that is a step closer …
