Migrating Metadata from Windows Plex Server to QNAP

Yep… 100% correct!

Screenshot 2021-08-20 143344|423x358

Now, for the tricky , but not so tricky part.

  1. SSH (or putty ssh) into the QNAP
  2. cd /share/PlexData
  3. ls -la

Show me that output please.

This confirms a very important piece of this puzzle is in place.

Chuck,

Here is what I got

/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/PlexData$ ls -la
total 12
drwxrwxrwx 2 admin administrators 4096 Aug 19 21:40 .
drwxrwxrwx 39 admin administrators 4096 Aug 20 14:32 …
lrwxrwxrwx 1 admin administrators 69 Aug 19 21:38 Plex Media Server → /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/Plex Media Server

Perfect!

Now that we know that’s in place, please allow me to be pedantic.

while you are there in the ssh

we’re going to verify everything is exact

The two should be identical.

Also notice the owner is admin:administrators

If this is not the case we will make it perfect. (don’t forget that trailing .)

chown -R admin:administrators .

If all looks good then we’re ready to do.

Back in the browser:

  1. Sign out of Plex/web
  2. Start Plex
  3. Wait 30 seconds or so for it to startup
  4. Open http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web

This server may or may not be your old server by name. I don’t expect it to be.

I do expect it to say “Got It” and want you to sign in.

Let me know when you get to this point.

Chuck,

Sorry it took me so long to get back… So here is where I am at… I set up one of my nvidia shields with the latest version of Plex and reset it. I then set up a very small sub-set of music on there and get it all set up with all the cover art/artists. I do all the steps but when I move over the data and start up the server on the qnap, I got NONE of the cover art… (accept one). The one I do get is one I added manually. I am also missing artists but it seems like I see the ones I added but not the ones that the system found.

(EDIT). Seems like if I refresh metadata it does bring it back in. I guess I could wait a night or two for it to refresh the meta data but any thoughts as to why this isn’t coming in right away?

I know this should always be the same (database) but could there be something going from Nvidia Shield to Qnap?

Hi,

I have just set up my Qnap nas and setting up plex. I am having an issue where I can not modify the files in the in the /share/PlexData/Plex Media Server folder.

As soon as I created the /share/PlexData it created and populated the /Plex Media Server folder as if plex is running. I have it installed but stopped.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling plex with the same results.
Any one have any idea?

I fixed it in a bass ackward way. I renamed the share moved the files then renamed it back. I know it is not pretty but it worked.

ChuckPa,

So here is where I am at… I did this a bit different and it seems to be working. I installed Plex and started it up to Get the ID and then shut it down. I then SSH into the file system and deleted everything out of the Plex Media server directory but the Preferences.xml.

Before I copied all the data over (105GB)… I edit the database. The problem with moving from the Shield to the Qnap is the old path will never be resolved. So when I do a scan, it never finds the dupes. I open up the DB browser and edit the following table

update media_parts
set file = replace(file, ‘/storage/NAS/Media/Music/’, ‘/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/Media/Music/’)

I then update my library under the section_locations table to my new path as well.

One I copy everything over… I should have a 100% ready to go system. I then do a full metadata refresh and it seems to be bringing in all my cover art where I know it would not be picked by the service.

All is working now and I should have 100% system up and running on the qnap. Now doing the Sonic scanning on 26K albums… going to take like like 20 days from what I saw with a smaller scan… is what it is.

you are braver than I.

I am waiting for a new 84TB RAID to setup and I’m anxious as heck
– because there’s 50TB of data to put on it
