Can anyone advise with a how to question please.
I’m setting up a TS-251 for my daughter for her new home and basically need to copy the TV and film libraries from the current home NAS (TS-453 Pro). I’ve moved the actual TV and film files over to the new server using NAS to NAS backup so they’re in place and have also installed PMS on there to, though have not added the libraries so it doesn’t know the files are there.
What I want to do is to copy over the various tags, tweaks, pictures etc so that it is an exact copy of the current setup and that’s where I’m having problems. So can someone give me a simple guide as to where I find these files and the best way to copy them over. I appreciate that it would be via unix so any hints on the syntax would also be appreciated as well
The paths on both servers should be the same ( assuming I’ve done it correctly ) so hopefully will make it easier to do
Then ones more, use NAS2NAS copy for all contents in the created share
After it finish, close PMS on both QNAP’s, and copy the directory /share/Plex/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases to target QNAP, overwriting what’s there
Then delete the file named: /share/Plex/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml on the target QNAP
Start Plex on both, and when browsing to target QNAP’s PMS, it should say it’s unclaimed
Having a little issue with this which I assume is to do with permissions. I installed the QPKG ok on both source and target QNAP’s and can see the path created on both.
When I then try to set up the NAS2NAS backup I cannot see the plex path on the destination NAS. I know that the admin user for the destination is validated ok so it’s not a connection problem - I also used the same setup to copy the TV and film files originally.
I have checked the plex folder on the destination and admin has r/w rights for it - any ideas as to what I’ve missed on that folder at all?
Update for dane22, after looking through and finding the folders on the destination NAS, they then ‘appeared’ in the file tree and so allowed me to do the copying as you indicated. So I now have the same setup on the destination as the source including all of the tags etc that I set up - so that has saved me so much work.
Now the only things I have found is that none of the artwork has been copied over for TV shows and films. I’m assuming they are located elsewhere and need to be copied, has anyone any ideas where they may be located?
Now that I have the copying process sorted then it won’t be hard to do, just a question of which folder
Thanks for the package and help dane22, very much appreciated
nailed it
everything as it should be - does what it says it will
For anyone following this thread then this is a great way to also backup up your plex settings so that you’re not in trouble should you ever need to rebuild your Plex set up.
Once again thank you dane22
I’ve tried all the steps above in the manual way as well as Dane’s file share and still not getting the file structures listed. I have all the media files moved to the target NAS. I still cannot find a way to copy over the user account data (names, shows watched/not, custom metadata, etc. ) from the original QNAP NAS to the new target one. I have over 7Tb of media and really do not want to start over from scratch. Is there any live chat assistance from Plex? If not, some more granular steps for moving from version 1.14.1.5488 (original NAS) to the new one loaded with version 1.15.4. Thanks for any assistance.
On the target (new) NAS It didn’t show up initially. After reviewing the other posts I noticed that it apparently would create a directory calls PLEX. I am currently using a folder named Plex for all the media sub-folders. I renamed the media folder to Plex Media and then reinstalled the qpkg file on the target NAS. After waiting 30 mins suddenly there was a new folder Plex with sub-folders of Cache, Codecs, Crash Reports, Logs, Plug-in Support, Plug-ins, etc.
The problem is that on the source NAS all the media files are in a root folder of Plex. It just has the media file folders and nothing that matches the stuff above. I have tried to load it on the source twice and nothing has changed on the source NAS. I can’t find the files that need to be moved over with all the preference, metadata, etc. I can access the source NAS (via Putty) and the do note seem to be a matching file folder structure. The PMS on the source only seems to be found at share/CACHEDEV2_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer. However the folder structure within does not match up. I tried to tar up the Library as a previous manual process suggested ( tar cf /share/movies/PlexLibrary.tar ./Library`) and it only generates an error of no file/folders found.
I completed in terminal (Putty) logged in as admin. It just came back with a new prompt (no message done or not). In terminal I loaded up /share/CACHEDEV2_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library directory and it only has a sub-folder of “tmp” in it. I tried looking via NAS File Station and I see nothing new. I logged out of the source NAS and back in again as admin and now I finally see a new folder PlexLibShare. It has “Resources” and “Library” folders plus a lot of chunk-stream#-#####.m4s files.
Hmmm…It was supposed to be rooted at the Library folder, but regardless, the stuff you want to copy using NAS2NAS util is located in the Library folder
So just copy the Library folder contents from the source now and replace them in the destination NAS overwriting the Library folder. After that, is there anything else that needs to be done? I read in another post about deleting the Preferences.xml file. Should I copy/replace/delete anything else?
Above was to keep both PMS servers alive, and since you are moving to a new one, no need to manipulate with the Preferences.xml file. Simply copy it over, and target NAS will take over the identity of the old one
Ok, great. One other item was that I had to rename the folder with all the media sub-folders (music, movies, etc.) from Plex to Plex Media. When i start up on the new NAS I will I just repoint the folder structure or should I just move those media folders into the “Plex” main folder as it used to be to avoid conflicts?
