Hi, sorry for the very basic noobish question. I have given up trying to get Plex to run on Linux. I’m a linux noob so it’s been a bit of a struggle. i’m currently just running it on a windows 10 PC, which is on a shared homegroup. And using chrome remote desktop, I’m able to stash it out of the way.
But I was hoping to switch computers, as I have one that is a bit older & wanted to know if the specs are too low. I read that the minimum requirement for Plex is Intel Core i3, but I’m not 100% sure if this will be enough or not.
AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8Ghz
8GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6450 4GB graphics card
Just a regular IDE hard drive for the OS & Plex media is off of an external Hard drive. I’ll perhaps add a few other internal ones for more Plex server space in future.
If your just looking to upgrade for plex do not give up on linux. I would suggest a NAS box like QNAP. You get the reliability and Plex runs great. Look at the 453 Be or D.
You also get native support and so do not need to know linux as they provide a fairly nice gui as part of the custom linux OS
Both also provide hardware transcoding avoiding the bigger pricey cores and avoids bigger power bills
It is possible to use these machines as a Plex server.
But then you will have to preparate all your video files in advance, so they are compatible with all your client devices and don’t have too high a bitrate.
“Forced Subtitles” should be burned into the video picture, to avoid transcoding during playback.
i.e. the same which is required when using Plex server on a small NAS device.
Or you may have to invest more into Plex client devices, so these have more abilities and support a broader palette of audio/video/subitles codecs.
i.e. the native Plex clients on Windows and MacOS and the nVidia Shield do support more codecs than e.g. a Chromecast or a Smart TV.
Ok, I’ll have to dive into it a little more as I’m not 100% sure how to prepare the files in advance.
But I have been using the first machine for some time now and I haven’t had any issues as of yet. I’m just using an android tablet, a phone and a Samsung TV so far as client devices.
