Hi, is it possible for me to enable Sonic Analysis for a user in my home? One of my users is hosting their own plex media server, and can’t access that feature. I have a lifetime plex pass and my user (partner) was the one who paid for it, we put it on my account as I had the only server we were using at the time.
They’ve since been setting up their own music server and have found that the option to do sonic analysis isn’t there, which is disappointing, as they bought the lifetime pass specifically for that feature. Is the only way to get it working to host their media library on my current server?
It is unfortunate if that’s the case, as I am no longer able to leave my server on 24/7, which is why they set theirs up recently.
What version of PMS have they installed?
Sonic features aren’t available on all platforms. Aside of the Plex Pass requirement for the server owner, there’s more requirements (from the related support article):
You must be running Plex Media Server v1.24.0 or newer
Windows, macOS, and Linux (64-bit only) are supported (this includes most NAS devices)
ARM-based CPUs are not supported (with the exception of Apple’s M1 systems, which use Rosetta 2 emulation)
They are using Version 1.25.2.5319, Windows 11 Pro 64-bit
I read that support article and I believe the reason they don’t have access to the feature is because they are the server owner of their server, but Plex pass is on my account. So even though they’re in my home, since I’m not the admin of their server, there isn’t the option. Would that assumption be correct?
I’m not sure I follow, sorry. They’re in my home because we live in the same house, and until recently were accessing my media server on their devices for music, and they still access my server for tv and movies. They’ve recently set up their own for a few reasons, 1) I haven’t had my PC running all the time recently, and 2) They wanted a separate media server for their music and audiobooks, we share pretty different tastes and didn’t wanna combine ours together.
Just a suggestion. It’s possible to have multiple servers under one account. Why not set up a 2nd server on your partner’s machine, using your plex pass enabled account? Sonic Analysis would then be an option for that server.
I think you’d have to delete the existing server from the second machine completely, and start over. I had two servers running at one time. It takes a bit of configuration to get them up and running, but there some info here on the forums. I’m pretty sure in this case there are no “Terms of Service” broken …
This is a good idea, thanks for suggesting it. It’s disappointing that they don’t have that feature, but if it’s because typical use case is for just one user to have a server in a plex home and that only one user can be admin, it does make sense that they don’t, I’m sure they’ll be willing to let me recreate the server in my account.
I don’t think we’ve been using plex in a way that’s against terms of service. They used to run their own server before moving in with me, hence having their own account. Nothing I’ve seen indicates the way we’ve been using it is against the rules, but if that is the case I would definitely like to know so we can correct that.
technically, it’s your server, just happens to be running on your partner’s machine. Or at least the one they use… it could be yours as far as Plex knows.
