MKV file (H264 video codec/MP3 audio codec) will not play on Roku

Server Version#:1.19.2.2673-776106bc6
Player Version#: Roku

I ran into a series of files that will not play on either of my Roku. They .mkv files with H264 video codec and MP3 audio codec (detailed media info below).

For trouble shooting, I tried playing the files directly on my PC in VLC media play. They play fine so it doesn’t appear to be an problem or corruption in the files themselves.

They play on the Plex Media Player on my Win 7 PC. That didn’t surprise me because it’s the same Win 7 PC running the Plex Media Server. So I figured that player may be able to play local content without transcoding. (BTW, is that correct?)

What surprised me is that the files play on my Plex media player running on my macBook. I would think that requires transcoding because that is no longer local content.

The problem is only with the two Roku’s, neither of which can play the content. BTW, when I say “can’t play”, I select the file, it does the spinning progress wheel with the percentage processed before playing (ie 30%, 60%, etc). That takes the same amount of time as any any other video. When it gets to 100% where the video would normally play, it immediately goes to the same screen that the player normally goes to at the end of show (the one that shows what you just watched and starts a countdown to auto-playing the next episode unless your interviene).

Any ideas?
