.mkv files simply will not play

Hi there, very new to the forum but I figured I’d turn to the experts. I have Plex server running on a 2019 MBP running Big Sur. I play files through my Apple TV (2019) and it works seamlessly - except with .mkv files, which it has never been able to play. The files are there, in the folder with all the other files (which Plex can see), but they remain invisible to Plex.

I can play them no problem with VLC, which I then stream to the Apple TV with Screen Mirroring, and friends who have the same .mkv files from the same sources can play it on their similarly-set up systems, but mine just refuses to see them. I’ve tried renaming, rescanning, moving, futzing with all of the settings on every device in the chain…nothing. Is there a setting somewhere I’ve missed? It’s really mystifying.
Thanks.

If Plex is completely “not seeing” / missing the MKV files, this is usually either a permission issue (shouldn’t be a problem on macOS) or an issue with naming/organization. Plex will e.g. ignore files named according to the tv-show naming schema in a movie library and vice versa.

If there’s an issue with how you organized your files, it can also happen that Plex accidentally mismatches them as different versions of another file.
