Server Version#: 1.31.3.6868
Player Version#: 5.57.2 (Plex for Samsung)
Hello,
i have a MY CLOUD EX2 ULTRA NAS, where Plex Media Server is installed. On my second Samsung TV ( Samsung TU8079) i have installed Plex for Samsung. When i play a movie it is buffering a lot and unwatchable.
I tried to play a 1080p movie with 5.1 DTS. In the Plex Dashboard i can see that the audio is converted to AAC.
So my question is: is my NAS to weak to play those movies, or can i change any settings to make this better?
But your TV does not support DTS tracks. Audio transcoding of higher-end codecs (Dolby TrueHD) has always been an issue. But DTS to AAC shouldn’t really be all that bad at all. However, the My Cloud EX2 processor isn’t the best, and I’m assuming you are streaming over Wi-Fi when you say your “second Samsung TV”. Direct connection or moving the router closer to the TV, if possible, might be your best bet. I’m betting your Wi-Fi speed is way too slow.
Hmmm the only thing I can think of is that Plex recommends 2GB of RAM, but they state it can run on less. The My Cloud EX2 has 1GB of DDR3 (which isn’t the best). Couple that with a lower-level processor that is transcoding something and that might be the issue. But it still looks like you are passing through far less data than it should be. I mean, it does have gig ethernet.
Can you grab Server Logs? That will tell a better story for what’s going on.
Other than that, the only thing I can see is that you are running at a high bitrate for that file, which might be overloading the EX2 with the transcoding as well.
One quick test here would be to convert the audio to ac3 from DTS since your tv doesn’t support it and try to play the file. My guess is that it will work and stop buffering. I agree that transcoding audio shouldn’t take that much power but sometimes it is enough. Give it a go.
I am not streaming over Wi-Fi, my TV is wired in the network…
Just so you’re clear, and to avoid confusion a Samsung TU8079 connected through it’s ethernet is going to max out at 100mb despite what Samsung might tell you. Often you’re better off using a 5Ghz wireless connection which will achieve far higher speeds. See Solved: 8000 series (2018) TV Ethernet speed - Samsung Community - 467054 for reference.
Thanks for all the answers. The problem is that the NAS is to weak for Plex. AC3 is running very smooth, no buffering. DTS is buffering a lot because of the convertion from the audio.
So my idea now is to add a Rasperry Pi, where i can install Plex Media Server and then mount my NAS on the Rasperry. Is this a good solution, or does anyone else have a better one?
