Movies with an nfo

Hello,
I am adding several movies (downloaded from ARD/ZDF-Mediathek) to my plex library movies. After downloading I am checking the movie with “Tiny Movie Manager” - downloading info, FSK, poster and so on. With these information TMM is creating an NFO.

Scanner/Agent of the library is “Plex Movie” (plus "prefer artwork based on library language
", “Use local assets”, “Prefer local metadata”. After adding these movies, it seems that Plex does not get all information, for example summary. It seems that Plex does not find any information of this movie in the “internet”.
Is there any chance to add the movie.nfo in case the summary and also FSK is empty ?

Thanks in advance.

From what I remember, the only information from a nfo file used by Plex is the external ID (e.g. the IMDB reference)

I’m not sure the Plex Movie scanner still looks in .nfo files at all, now that you can add IDs directly to filenames.

@quadro are these mainstream “Movies” - are they in IMDB or TheMovieDB? What are they? Can you share the file and directory names that you are using for them?

Thanks for the info.
If this is the case, I will go back to the “XBMCnfoMovieImporter” - this works very well the last years !

Plugins are officially deprecated, and I’m surprised every year that they continue to work. Someday there will be a final day …

I’m not sure which MP4 tags Plex supports; if it’s a basic set, it might be possible to simply tag your media files.

This is correct.

Don’t enable this unless you know what you’re doing and have perfectly curated embedded metadata for any mp4 files in your library.

@drzoidberg33: I am using the feature “Prefer local metadata” because the info is telling me “When scanning this library, prefer embedded tags and local files if present.”.
My expectation is now, that Plex will use the movie.nfo I have created with TMM. If not, what does “local files” means in this case ?

And again: the “old” XMBCnfoMovieImporter is still a great tool to import all necessary information.

“When scanning this library, prefer embedded tags and local files if present.”.

Embedded tags = tags inside mp4 files.

Local files = posters and artwork.

This help text is going to get updated to make that clearer in a future update.

@drzoidberg33, for clarity, are .nfo files currently only used (for ttXXXXXXX extraction) on initial file discovery?

@drzoidberg33: Thanks for the info. That helps to understand what “local files” means.
@Volts: Yes, these files are in IMBD, BUT there is no poster and also no summary. Now, I understand that there is no info in Plex too. Thanks for this hint.

However, an option to use a local movie.nfo would be fine.

Good question. Not really sure what you mean.
Have created an additional library with the XMBC Agent and it works fine.

Yes, it’s used in the initial scan to do the match. It won’t rematch if you just change the nfo and refresh.

Also note that this feature requires that each of your movies are inside their own folders (alongside the nfo file), it will not work if all movies are in one folder.

Thanks to all for clarification.
I will use still the new “Plex Movie” Scanner/agent and will only add the missing information of movies manually.

what if I name the .nfo file the same as my .mkv or .m2ts? it is very important for me to leave the names unchanged, although they may not be well connected with logic=(
for example:
21_Bridges.2019.BDRip.2160p.HDR.TeamHD.by Silverok.mkv
21_Bridges.2019.BDRip.2160p.HDR.TeamHD.by Silverok.nfo

this will solve the problem when it is possible to have several different movies and .nfo in the same folder.

No it won’t work if there multiple movies in the same folder. You either need one movie per folder with an included nfo or you must put the imdb/tmdb id in the file or folder name.

now that you can add IDs directly to filenames.

Is that somewhere in the documentation now? I’m poking around and can’t find it. That would make my life IMMEASURABLY easier for a handful-hundred movies that Plex absolutely refuses to match correctly every time I rescan the bloody directory.

Yes, search for “IMDb” on this page:
