Movies with DTS are stuttering on latest Roku Ultra 2020

I’m also seeing this behavior in my new Roku Ultra 4800. It occurs when Direct Playing any DTS stream, DTS Stereo, DTS 5.1 or 6.1, DTS-HD MA. The audio comes through fine, but the Direct Played video stutters constantly. When I tested my Roku Streaming Stick+ (4k) it Direct Played all files with DTS perfectly, audio and video.

Disabling Direct Play and forcing Direct Stream is an ok workaround, but why not fix the Roku Ultra software so it works properly?

Any update on this?

Hey hey whoa there, slow down buddy. It’s only been 33 since the last totally off-base official reply. Give them some time!

has anybody tried creating a custom profile for our new Rokus too see if that fixes our issues, since it looks like the Plex team just doesn’t care at the moment?

I’m having a slightly different issue. Direct play and original quality on causes the 4k colors to be washed out and no Atmos. I have to change original quality to 20mbs and direct play off to get the picture correct. still no Atmos. Just 7.1. When I got this unit on November 20 it worked fine. Then about the same time the Roku was updated I started having issues. I thought it was the Roku until I came across this thread and tried the suggested settings. Also before the issue started I also would get the HDR or Dolby vision logo. I don’t get that anymore. The files I am playing all have been played and still play as they are supposed to if I watch them through my OPPO 203. Something updated that broke everything.

anvarij, I suggest you create a new topic for your issues as this one is getting zero attention. Good luck to you!

This is definitely a different problem, but it sounds like it’s just being tonemapped and you’re losing all of the HDR. You should post a new topic with some logs from your failed 4K playback for them to look at.

Popping in a reply so I can find this again. Just set up an Ultra 4800 this morning. First play of a Plex movie on it and the stuttering was unbelievable. Switched to transcode it and it’s fine. I’ll try disabling direct play next.

I do not know if I would call it stuttering, but when DTS is played on Plex through the Roku OS, it will play, but if I rewind or fast forward on the material, I will have no audio. This is a huge issue.

Same issue here. Just gifted my inlaws a 2020 Roku Ultra. Most of my video files in my remote server are DTS or DTS-HD. Constant stuttering issue, as theres enough bandwidth they do not need to transcode. Would love to see this taken seriously as its annoying here for them, and will be when I get home to finish my home theater install. I won’t be switching over to the 2020 model until this is resolved.

**i turned off direct play for a sample file and the stuttering stopped. looks like a simple and traced back issue for them to resolve. ***

Still waiting on a reply from someone @Plex. I have users of my server now complaining with the same issue.

Paging @ChuckPa

Since you knew to page me…

You should also know what I’m going to ask for… :smiling_imp:

  1. XML in a text file (the media part only)
  2. The PMS DEBUG (not Verbose) which capture the start of a playback (only need 20 seconds. (pause playback and pull the logs)
  3. The Player Debug logs (while playback paused)

Now, after capturing the above, resume playback.

Stop playback and Capture the logs again when the problem happens.

Attach all files

  1. Media XML
  2. Server logs after start of playback
  3. Player logs after start of playback
  4. Server logs after failure
  5. Player logs after failure.

(3 text files and 2 ZIP files)

I’m experiencing this problem as well with my new Roku Ultra (2020). I will try to upload logs over the weekend.

In the meantime for others working with the same problem I was able to partially resolve the issue (except for HDR content) by going to Settings>System>Advanced system settings>Advanced display settings> and turning "Auto-adjust display refresh rate to “On” and turning HDR always on to “Off” (which looks way better to me). This however introduced a new problem which is that HDR content looks all washed out (which makes no sense).

Turning Auto-adjust display refresh rate to “Off” makes the HDR content look as it should when being played but the stutter returns.

Oddly enough if I go through Roku settings and Plex Roku settings when I turn off “Allow DTS-HD” in the Plex for Roku settings my first playback will play DTS-HD Direct play with NO STUTTER but if I stop and try again it will start transcoding as it should. If I repeat the stutter will return until I mess with the Roku’s settings and then go back in forth. I also found that with Allow DTS-HD unchecked if I pause and unpause a lot it will Direct Play without stutter. This is with the Roku audio settings set to “auto pass-through”. I haven’t tried any other way, there are so many settings variations it is difficult to test them all.

The good news with that statement is that although not a solution it’s obviously something that can be fixed.

In the meantime I think the best options to preserve video quality is to transcode audio until the problem can be properly identified and corrected.

Happening on a Roku Ultra and Roku Streaming Stick+.

Any time direct play is being used with DTS/TrueHD audio, the audio stutters constantly (cuts out for <0.5 seconds every 10 seconds or so) . Disabling direct play makes the audio work but my server can’t handle 4k transcodes this obviously isn’t ideal - as I now essentially can’t watch 4k HDR content through my Roku at all with Plex.

i will replicate one of my problem files later today and try to get the logs you asked for, thanks for the help.

Different user, but similar problems. Can I DM you logs? I know the plex logs have lots of account emails I would rather not post on a forum like this.

Also, how do you get the media XML?

I have the same issue when playing DTS and DTS-HD files. Disabling direct play and using direct stream corrects the playback. I was able to direct play the same files via Jellyfin, fwiw. I guess this is a Plex issue, and not a Roku issue or encode issue. I can PM you what you asked for if you still need it. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay.
Got sucked deep into Synology development for a bit.

Regarding Roku logs and companion DEBUG Plex logs zips.

I will send a PM to each of you to attach your logs to.

Disabling Direct Pay solves the choppy video problem, but it downgrades my DTS to Dolby Digital. This is not an acceptable solution. The Plex team shouldn’t demand all users waste time providing logs, etc. when we’re all experiencing the same problem. Perhaps this is really a Roku problem, though? I had the same problem using Tversity on my Roku Ultra 2020. I never had any playback issues on my WD media player.

Same issue here. Have had it since getting the 2020 ultra about 2 months ago. Inadvertently fixed it by transcoding every stream, but disabling direct play fixed it 100% of the time.
