FWIW, I see a somewhat similar issue with the same Roku and Netflix when playing 4K Dolby Vision content (visual studder every so often, not as frequently as in Plex though, audio not affected). Maybe the problem is with the new hardware/Roku’s API on top of it?
Same issue as everyone else - 2020 Roku Ultra here and any file that is DTS stutters with direct play where it’s unwatchable. It looks like it’s a slide show.
If I disable direct play there’s no issues. I’ve just started to notice this over the past couple of weeks and it did NOT do this before. I have a VERY beefy PC running my server, 16gb ram Nvidia RTX 2060 8gb so it’s not that and this setup has had no issues until now.
I get wanting everyone to send logs, but at this point, it’s not just a person with a particular setup, it’s many, many people. You should be able to identify the issue, Plex!
Because it’s been ongoing for over 2 months with no resolution in sight, I just replaced my Roku Ultra with an Nvidia Shield TV Pro due to this issue and it works perfectly on the Shield TV Pro.
Has any progress been made by plex to resolve this, and have folks shared logs? If more need to be sent I will compile mine and forward.
At this point I’m pretty disappointed in the lack of communication and progress on something widely described as an issue. I have 3 roku 2020 ultras I don’t want to deploy until this is resolved, and gifted one to family that complains about the same stuttering issue.
We are investigating this. In the short term we may have to force an audio transcode for this specific model until a firmware fix can be made. In the mean time, would anyone affected by this be willing to go into the Roku audio settings and change it to “Dolby Digitial” or “Dolby Digital Plus” (make sure not to select an option with DTS) and confirm playback is working? (this is not a fix, but a confirmation of a temporary workaround)
I apologize if it’s been included before, but I couldn’t find any XML info or samples included in this thread. Could anyone experiencing this issue send me the XML information and hopefully a sample that reproduces the issue? Please feel free to DM me the information.
I just tested a file that would stutter with dts by making a roku setting change to dolby digital not plus as the audio option. No stuttering and it transcodes and plays fine.
So both this change and disabling direct play are work around right now.
Yeah, changing the Roku audio setting plays the video fine with no stutter.
It looks like need to defer to the PMS to start a transcode session if there is DTS audio for this specific Roku model. The streams will be copied if they are compatible, so no quality loss. It’s not ideal, so we will file an issue with Roku to see if they can fix this in their OS. We should have an update soon to handle this without the need for user intervention.
We have published the workaround to the preview channel.
I was just doing some testing and noticed that my previous report (several posts up) about direct play in Jellyfin working fine was incorrect. I just noticed the same issue in Jellyfin, which makes me think this is actually an issue with the Roku device.
I just installed the Plex preview channel on my Roku Ultra, and unfortunately I have to report that I’m still observing bad stuttering when Direct Playing content with DTS audio.
Edit: I guess the workaround in 6.7.6 is to force Direct Stream for these files.
For whatever reason I get no audio with my soundbar over ARC with this fix. It seems like the audio needs to be transcoded instead of copied in my situation.
just played 3 of my DTS files on the preview channel and they played fine (automatically direct streamed) i guess this is the fix for now until plex can figure something out with Roku…
New method sorta works. Still get audio drop outs on EAC3,AC3,and DTS audio. This is with and without forcing ‘direct streaming’. The drop outs happen much less frequently then before though.
I’m using Plex preview and I still get video stutter with files that are DTS 5.1. So this fix hasn’t worked - Plex does seem to auto direct stream the content, but I still have tons of stutters every few seconds.
so we will file an issue with Roku to see if they can fix this in their OS.
Hi @ljunkie, any update from upstream? Thanks.
i can report that this happens to AAC 5.1 x265 files, the files play nice on my older 2019 ultra roku. Unsure if it would be related, but i have my TV set to adjust signal to the refresh rate of the file being played.
I’m having an issue where any DTS file automatically falls back to aac stereo on my roku premiere+.
Ive been using dts stutter free for the last year almost, and it hasn’t been a problem whatsoever.
I’m missing the option in the plex app on roku for “Allow DTS-HD” and even though i’ve cycled through multiple audio settings in the roku (auto, DD+ + DTS, etc) as well as modifying the roku profile to at least force AC3 5.1 playback instead of AAC stereo for DTS tracks, i’d like to be able to go back to it passing DTS through normally (i made backups of all my profile.xml’s in case i need to revert my temporary changes)
Roku will only show you the DTS-HD option if it can pass through DTS-HD to your receiver. Otherwise it will not show.
i am using the same receiver i’ve always used and its always worked. There used to be a checkbox on the roku plex app that said something to the effect of “allow DTS-HD” and i had it checked since it became available with no issues. I don’t think its the roku update to OS 10 that is causing the issue because my roku updated to OS 10 over a month ago and i played a DTS movie natively as recently as yesterday.
