Moving 1 individual Library's Media Content

Server Version#: 4.47.3

Hi all,
According to this article :
Plex Support : Move Media Content to a New Location
The process of moving a library is quite straightforward.

  1. stopped server
  2. copied the library files
  3. started server
  4. added the new folder (didn’t remove the old ones)
  5. scanned

Problem is : it seems that all the editing I have done, matching, merging, adding pictures etc, hours of library management, all that seems to have gone astray.

I thought the whole process was exactly for that exact purpose, keep the metadata organised.

Any suggestions ?

Did you remember this part?

Disable Emptying of Trash

On your Plex Media Server, you’ll want to disable the Empty trash automatically after every scan preference for the server.

Hey Dan How are you man ? Thanks for your reply.
Yeah I did that, but according to several posts I read since, apparently, the article mentioned as well as the method it describes doesn’t apply to manually edited information. I since then found other bits of information to do that, but it’s a much more complicated method.

That’s incorrect.
You lost your manual edits because Plex deleted the library items when it could no longer find them during your move. If you disable emptying of trash, Plex will keep that library record including your manual additions/modifications. Therefore, when you add the new location, Plex can re-associate the file to the existing library item (= no loss of your manual additions/modifications).

No need to tinker with the database etc.

Simply follow the procedure described in the support article you linked in your OP.

Hi Tom,

Thanks a lot for your reply.
I don’t know what to say.

  1. I didn’t delete the original files, I copied them to the new location and simply added the copied files to the library, as explained in the article, leaving the original folder untouched
  2. I also disabled the emptying of trash.

However, plex added everything in double, either it could match it itself and it’s great or it coulnd’t. There is also a few albums that I merged, those ended up shown as being split, as they were originally.

RIght now, I’m trying a 3rd method, using the linux symlink idea, seems to be working. if it actually does, it’s by far the easiest way

In that case it seems you had changed the agent used by your library at some point after adding all/most of your media. Therefore, Plex considers them different items
