The info on the ‘Move Media Content to a New Location’ support page says that when upgrading to a new hard drive we should “Name the new hard drive to the exact same name as the original drive”. I just want to know, since the page doesn’t mention it, is it not necessary to make sure the same drive letter is also used or does Plex not look at that?
If you’re replacing a hard drive, the easiest will indeed be using the same drive letter and paths.
If you want/need to change some part of that, you better take a look at the other use cases described in the support article.
For Windows, yes, same drive letter. Then there is no need to change your libraries, since they’ll still point to the same location.
You can use a different drive letter if you want, but the process requires extra steps. That is covered in the Moving Content to New Location section.
Thanks guys, I’m just surprised that information is not included in the support article since it says to “name the new location exactly the same as the original one”. I thought exactly would include the drive letter but the instructions only mention changing the name.
To be fair, only Windows computer shares use drive letters.
Maybe so but a small note in the support docs to say changing the drive letter is required in Windows wouldn’t go amiss. I do sometimes find the support docs a bit lacking when it comes to providing all the necessary information.
