Moving Plex from Windows 7 to Windows 10... database fun

Server Version#: 1.15.8.1163
Player Version#:

OK gang, hoping someone here has some experience with this and might be able to point me in the right direction.

I initially planned to merely upgrade from my Windows 7 Ultimate setup to Windows 10 Pro. Long story short, that process went all sorts of wrong and I wound up just setting up a fresh install of Windows 10 on a new SSD.

On the Win7 setup my Plex install resided on my D drive which is a mirrored RAID setup. The data etc. is all still there. MY new Plex server install on Win10 is on the C drive. I tried pointing the media library location to the appropriate location on D but that just resulted in Plex crashing every time I launched it. I had to edit the location back to C within the Plex registry settings to get it to load properly again.

Anyhow, I’d love to be able to gain access to the Win7 Plex data as I had years of customization in there including a large music video area which I had to complete all the metadata manually.

Any advice or am I just screwed on this one?

Did you think of granting your user account full access permissions to that folder? Because it is a NTFS volume, and it was made under a different Windows installation, it sure has different access permissions and some/many/most/all files and folders are probably read-only for your current Windows user account.

Here is a graphical tool to make this a little easier

Do also keep in mind that the path you type in to ‘The path where local application data is stored’ must not include ‘Plex Media Server’ as last part.
So if now your plex data reside in G:\plexdata\Plex Media Server\ , you type only
G:\plexdata into the input field.

Thanks for the suggestion. I reset the file permissions and tried again but ran into the same issue. “Plex Media Server was unable to open it’s media database”

Are you running PMS as a system service? And if so, under which user account?

Is it possible, that the database is damaged?
Restore one of the backup copies.
