Moving Server Mac to Mac

I’ve read the articles and tried to set up a new mac as a new plex server and failed. i moved the plex media server files from the old (current) to the new (destination). i’ve signed out and signed in and rebooted, but i must be missing something “easy” as i am sure people do this all the time. since i have my media movies etc backed up is it easier to just delete my old account and start over??

Don’t delete your account that won’t solve anything. So you are trying to transfer your current server to a new machine so it acts as if the exact same server?

You need to copy over the Plex Media Server folder in ~/Library/Application Support as well as the com.plexapp.plexmediaserver.plist file that is in ~/Library/Preferences.

thanks for responding … i copier both over (using flash drive) and removed the equivalent on the destination mac. do i have to delete them in the original host? i turned the original host off (shutdown) and still my plex app on roku on saw the new one as an extension not the new host

If the server application it not actually running on original machine then it doesn’t matter.

I’m not really sure what you mean by “extension” in this context.

what i meant was the plex roku app could see the new destination mac but if i shut down the original server mac plex roku can’t access any server. so, despite copying over that plist file and the whole plex media server folder from the original to the destination i don’t know how to get the destination one as the main server

if i i opened a new account and just started over on the new computer why wouldn’t this solve the problem (deleting all the plex stuff from the original computer)?

If you want to start totally over then fine, create a new account. However, creating a new account is not the same as deleting your current account, which is like putting your driver license in the garbage thinking will fix a flat tire. Also when you delete an account for security reasons you cannot reuse the same email or username for a month.

When you copy over the plist file and the other folder. Both those servers are now the exact same, like a time traveler that meets himself. You cannot have both running and not have issues as they will conflict as they both have the same server ID that is in the plist file. If you don’t care about it being the exact same sever then just don’t copy over the plist file.

(I am of course assuming that media files are also in the same relative place on the old and new mac. Meaning if your old mac had movies in /Volumes/MacHD/Movies then the new mac has them in the same path)

well, i deleted the program from both computers (not my account) and started over. i can access both (with new names) and the old original one is gone (now renamed) … i think in the process I understood more clearly that plex operates as accessing multiple sources of data and you can choose which you are using as a server as you use it. my old idea (incorrect) was that there was a “main” source computer and the others shared that data. so what remains is making sure the new computer I use as the source I am updating with my data. I don’t see how to delete the old original server but I suppose it’s in there somewhere. not sure why copying over the plist+files didn’t work but at least i got it up and running. thanks for your help.
