Moving to Emby - Sick of Plex Devs not taking their users requests seriously

That kind of thing often gets fixed real quickly.

It was originally reported last December, so I’m not so sure yet. Could be a one-off.

It could also be that the tool(s) or libraries Emby uses do not have the needed ability. I looked up “DNG format” and after reading a bit (I do not claim to understand anything about photo formats or such and I use nothing but jpg.) I think I understand that tools to support it are free but not every library has it built in as it is moderately rare and not in general use for computer storage. But that may be changing based on some of the reading I have done.

I found the thread where it is being discussed and it does not seem as active as I would expect.

I also found a couple of other threads that discussed “DNG” but there does not seem to be much activity on that front although I did find a release note from server ver 3.0.5529 (back a couple of years) that said:

Supported photo formats now “.tiff”, “.jpeg”, “.jpg”, “.png”, “.aiff”, “.cr2”, “.crw”, “dng”, “.nef”, “.orf”, “.pef”, “.arw”

I just tested under Version 3.2.31.0 of their server under Windows and the test file that someone uploaded to that thread displays fine in the web app, Shield app, Fire TV app and the Roku app so it looks like your wishes are granted.

Can you share a playlist with another user on Emby? I might consider switching just for that

I’m kinda holding out until a back to school or start of winter sale or something over at envy. Or perhaps a switchers’ welcome or something. I’m currently on a lifetime Plex pass and buying another emby one would be stretching it for me, but I’m seriously considering it.

Since I have made the decision to switch and I am mostly finished and I am now using Emby almost for everything I decided to go ahead and get an Emby lifetime pass. After all it is just $119.00.

I feel about that purchase, at this time, exactly like I did about my Plex purchase some years ago: It is more to support development of the product than it is to get anything for me.

I still consider my Plex pass purchase as a good move it is just bad luck that Plex has moved away from what I wanted to support at the time of purchase. They just did not do what I wanted them to and moved away from the direction I wanted. That is their choice and my little Plex Pass guaranteed me nothing at all except continued access to whatever they did.

Emby could make bad moves for me in the future and I still will consider the investment of $119.00 as money well spent.

Plex has disappointed me but other bigger companies have done the same and with much greater impact to my life and much greater overall importance.

We all need to remember through all of this that this is just entertainment and it is unlikely to have any effect on the state of world hunger.

Well, I’ve just switched across to emby and whilst it isn’t as ‘polished’ as Plex, I can’t find too much that I am missing after using Plex for the last 6+ years. It doesn’t have Smart Playlists, which I used in Plex, but the major plus is that I’ve configured MY server so it can be accessed locally by me and remotely by friends and family (using a secure connection) without the server or any users being logged into an emby.media account.

This for me is more than enough to compensate for being able to find collections of stuff a little quicker. The whole UI/UX on emby feels slower on emby too, but some of that is probably me getting used to it.

I’m also currently in the process of moving my libraries to emby. So far I’m pleased: there are things that emby does better, than plex and things it does worse. Overall for me it’s a good alternative (also because a lot of plex features that are important for me are so buggy that they are literally unusable).

In general my assumption is that emby will see a boost in development as people are moving away from plex because of the recent changes in plex’s privacy policy and because of the huge number of unresolved bugs (Cloud sync for example is broken since almost 10 months!!!). That means I’m very positive that a lot of embys “shortcommings” will be resolved in the near future.

The only hassle so far for me is that I have to rewrite a lot of my scripts: my systems is very much automated and I have a bunch of scripts that are directly interacting with the plex (emby in future) database.

Oh and I had to rename the “plex” user on my Linux box to “emby”.

One of the things I think I’d like better in emby is their Kodi integration, it sounds as if it’s a much more native solution then the Plex add-on and more like PlexKodiConnect.

On the other hand I haven’t checked how things are privacy wise over there. Is it supposed to be better then what’s going on here?

I’m off a mind to just ditch the server thing all together and just go bare Kodi with port forwarding then use all these external services.

What’s also a possible annoyance is that the lifetime pass for emby is for the current major version only, although they said that for now there are not plans to introduce emby 4 … yet.

I’m another hacked off Plex Lifetimer

Their linking to Gobble and Feckbook are the final straw for me.

Vulture Capitalists. How to ruin a perfectly good idea. May they choke on their profits.

My problem with Plex has never had much to do with their privacy policy but rather with their inability to follow through with their software.

They add “features” but those “features” remain unfinished and even buggy. If fact another name Plex could use for their “features” is “bugs.” They seem to be totally unable to make even the most basic change without introducing more bugs than they fix.

Emby does have bugs but they have fewer bugs and they actually fix bugs most of the time shortly after they become aware of them.

As I have said before any complex system that is evolving, like Plex or Emby, is going to have bugs and any major change has a good chance of introducing problems. The indication of the quality of a company is how they respond to problems and that is where Plex is failing or even where they have already failed.

Emby has problems but they are addressing them and their clients are lacking polish but at least they work and each change moves their software forward and, unlike Plex, there is an overall gain every time they release an update.

In fact the only major thing they seem to lack, and I have not really seen it addressed on their forums yet, is the ability to reverse the sort order in their clients. That is if you are using an alphabetical sort from A-Z you cannot reverse it and have it sort Z-A. (The same is true for date sorts like release date.) I intend to bring it up in their forums for their clients but it really is pretty unimportant at this time as their system is stable and does work well.

Emby looks promising, it was able to play a 4K video to my Samsung TV without issue, something Plex hasn’t never been able to do without constant studdering. And I like the ability to have users without the need to phone home. But, it has issues working with Pale Moon, .30 worked, .32 doesn’t, seems even slower then Plex to display metadata and I had no luck editing metadata, nothing I edited was changed. I’ll look at it again after the Synology releases get converted over to netcore. If mobile sync actually works, that would be a huge plus, as that has been broken on Plex for so long its pitiful.

Like you said, I too no longer support Plex because of their moves away from customer responsiveness. Emby is NOT better software but they are a better company at this point.

I’m all for public displays of unrest, but asking for help with Emby on Plex’s forum, even for me, goes beyond what might be considered ‘fair use’.

Welcome to the forum, but take a hike.

lol

Does Emby have local sync to mobile?

I see Plex is still removing/censoring posts they don’t like.

Yes, but it’s called `download’ and it’s pretty much a straight download of the file to a mobile device.

To be fair the thread title kinda says it all  I am looking into Emby and have been amazed at the plugins:
Backup and Restore settings
Statistics
Audiobooks

Jeez I feel I have been wasting my time with Plex since they began to lose the plot a year ago (or more). Emby on the other hand seems to have come on in leaps and bounds…there is even a Kodi client for Emby if that’s your thing.
I’ll be testing Emby out over the next few days…I feel it’s time to shut down Plex server for good

Is there a way to run Emby and Plex on the same server with included behind the scenes stuff?

I actually did install Emby on my server, out of curiosity, but it’s adding my featurettes and stuff as separate movie titles.

I think you “should” be able to do that if your server is powerful enough but Plex and Emby will only share content movies/TV shows/Music/etc not any of the added stuff.

I don’t however think that Plex and Emby handle featurettes etc in the same way so it may not work correctly. I cannot say for sure as I use none of the extras at all.

You may want to ask over in the Emby forums and explain exactly what you want to do. There may be an easy way to accomplish the task. Of course there may not by it cannot hurt to ask over there.
