MP4 buffering for direct play?

Running the latest version of plex server and have been doing m4v files for years. I recently switched to mp4 files and now seeing buffering issues when direct play. It’s not all content but seems to be “some” movies and during the middle of the movie. Example…maze runner was running perfect the whole movie…until the last 20min and now it just buffers and plays a few frames and buffers and plays a few frames. Has anyone seen this before or any ideas what to look at?

The same movie runs just fine in VLC on my desktop, no issues.

My plex server is 100TB on a Synology NAS with Plex running on a windows 10 machine directly connected via 10GB fiber. The whole house is 10GB fiber or 10GBE and wifi is 5GHZ with strong signal everywhere.

You know that both mp4 and m4v are almost the exact same thing?
m4v is a minor extension of the mp4 container format… the key difference being that m4v was introduced by Apple to support DRM protected content (which was not initially supported by the mp4 standard).

When you’re dealing with regular content you can simply change the file extension from mp4 to m4v without much of a difference.

TL;DR: your buffering is super unlikely to have anything to do with switching your m4v files to mp4. If there is an issue it’s more likely about the content of those files.
Buffering is not necessarily an indicator for insufficient network bandwidth… your an experience this as well if your server isn’t actually direct-playing the media but cannot keep up with transcoding the content for one of your players.

Also… having your house wired with 10 GB fiber doesn’t protect you from a smart tv that only comes with a 100 Mbps LAN port which might well be limiting 4K playback.

Yes I am aware the two are similar.

All content is 1080p at most and Nvidia shield is 1GB network.

So… mind sharing some more technical details about the content of those containers?
You’ve left out all the interesting parts :wink:

  • what version of Plex Media Server do you have installed?
  • what version of the Plex for Android app is installed on your Nvidia Shield?
  • technical information on the video, audio streams and subtitles of an effected video?
    You can e.g. copy the information from ⋮ > Get Info > View XML when on the movie’s page in Plex Web → just need the content of the <Media ...>...</Media> section.

Can you upload your logs from both the iPad and your server after experiencing this buffering?
On the server… please enable debug logging under Settings > [Server Name] > General (but not verbose logging!!) before starting this.

Also, interesting that it’s only happening to audio content EAC3 which is something new I’ve been doing.

Seems indeed to confirm that the buffering is caused by the audio stream (re-sampling from 5.1 → stereo); sorry… not sure what exactly might be causing this

So I took the same movie and ran it through handbrake converting to standard AC5.1 from EAC5.1 and it works perfectly. So seems like EAC is the underlying issue on iOS devices.
