Much faster (hopefully), smaller (mostly) and better PMS builds (1.11.1.119-f6453dcf1)

Hello Forum users!

For some time now, a small internal team has been working on revamping how we handle the numerous dependencies of Plex Media Server as well as the toolchains and the build system itself. This is not only great for our developers, but also allows us to fix issues and adopt new technology faster than before. We also took this opportunity to upgrade some of those dependencies and to improve pretty much every aspect of producing a release. All this required quite a few under-the-hood changes, touching on a wide range of functionality.

So now, we have a special forum-only preview build for you that walks and talks like a regular Plex Media Server release, but is produced in a fundamentally different way. We kindly ask for your feedback to make sure we are not breaking anything during this process. Basically, we’re looking for users to run this new build and pay attention to see if anything suddenly stopped working that was working fine with the previous build.

Once we are finished with testing and addressing your feedback we will be moving to this new setup internally, so all new releases will be built like this.

Since these are highly experimental builds, if you decide to test them, make sure that all your backups are up-to-date or that you are testing in a safe environment.

Find the download links below. You will notice that not every supported platform and architecture has a build here. We are still working on integrating those with this new setup.

Other than the under the hood build system changes, are there any other bug fixes in this build?

#3

Yes, but those will also be part of the next normal release. The binaries here are pretty much “latest pms code” + “large amount of changes to fit it with the build system and toolchain changes”. The most obvious user-facing improvements are the reduced sizes and hopefully better performance.

#4

Sounds great, thank you! I got the new build installed on my Synology NAS (DS718+) and have done some tests with the Android client. .srt sub files are no longer displaying the text. Instead they just show up as “Chapter 1”, “Chapter 2”, etc. Is there somewhere else I should post about this? Thanks.

#5

Thanks, that’s exactly the kind of feedback we are looking for. No, it’s fine to post in this topic only.

#6

@sztomi I’ve noticed two other issues in my brief testing. In a browser such as Edge, Chrome, or Vivaldi - (LAN and outside the network) when I try to play a movie I get the message “Playback Error - This server is not powerful enough to convert video.” This has only been an issue on this new build. Worked fine before.

The other bug that I have noticed is that on Android the audio starts playing back before the video does… you see a frame of the video which appears stuck while the audio is playing, and then after a few seconds the video starts playing and is synced with the video.

Thanks!

I do not know what happened but when I first installed this and it finished and displayed the final dialog clicking on “Launch” caused absolutely nothing to happen and there was no entry in “Programs” for “Plex Media Server” and there was no Plex icon hidden or otherwise.

I rebooted and Plex and Plex did not start and there still was no icon and Plex was not accessible via any interface.

I reran the installer and was offered only repair and remove as options. I chose repair and the message “Stopping Plex” came up and the repair continued and completed and this time when clicking “Launch” Plex launched and ran normally.

Everything seems fine but I just wanted to report the instillation glitch in case it needed to be addressed.
My server is Windows 10 with all the updates and patches and runs nothing else except Plex and TightVNC for remote access.

BTW: The interface on my Roku seems somewhat snappier in that the posters seem to load faster and the videos, that are stored on another computer, seem to start faster but all that “could” be just me hoping that there would be improvement and therefore seeing what is not there.

#8

@mtappert Thanks a lot for the info! If you happen to have any log files, please post them.
@Elijah_Baley Thanks, we definitely messed a bit with the installer, so apparently something went wrong there. Did you have a previous version installed? If so, what version?

#9

i don’t suppose there will be an official docker image tag that has this build in it? that would really be the quickest/easiest way to test the build in a safe environment

#10

@sztomi

of course, features would have to work correctly in the current versions of the server to see if this broke something

so instead of VR

how about fixing

commercial skipping worse in the latest version vs the version prior

live tv and recording still crashing the trasncoder and plex server

collections now litter my library with hundreds of collections with just one movie in it… that in no way shape or form belong in a collection… like 300…

sync is still flakey

appleTV integration is still a poor and that thread has never ending complaints that the devs point to server as the issue… and vice versa

my plex server insists on binding to a NIC that doesnt even have interent access because after 5+ years of saying that plex needs to have assigned binding… it has still yet to be addressed

and on and on…

#11

Tried installing the ubuntu amd version and it would not install… reverted back to the current plex pass beta.

live tv and recording still crashing the trasncoder and plex server

Not just the live tv and recording… it is the optimization for mobile or TV isn’t working anymore…

Has the transcoding issue been resolved? For instance, none of my DVR shows transcode to mobile or TV without have a pixelation issue. The original has no issues playing or downloading and playing. This has plagued PLEX since december. Please help.

Yep, I had 1.11.0.4666-fc63598ba installed. I believe that is the latest beta (Plex Pass) release. I feel pretty safe installing “new” releases because I also have Plex running on my Shield and in the worse case I can watch my content from there or I can even use Emby if things go really screwy because I keep an Emby server running on another device.

BTW: I was a little nervous about that beta release. Having 666 in the version number is not really confidence inspiring.

@s@sztomi

I successfully downloaded and installed the .bin file for WD EX2100, however there were two major issues immediately.

– Live TV received the error “Live TV Failed - Live TV support could not be started”. This occurred both on Roku and Android tablet.

– Two scheduled OTA recordings both aborted. (local news at 6pm and ABC Nightly News at 6:30pm) both half-hour programs. The .grab folders were created but never populated. Also noted that neither tuner of my HDHR Extend became “active” when those shows started to air.

Had to reinstall WDMyCloudEX2100_plexmediaserver_11104666-fc63598ba. Once reinstalled, ABC Nightly News successfully “partial” recorded.

Live TV is completely broken on all platforms including Plex web. And yes I have logs and I will PM them to you if needed.

On 16.04.3 LTS (Xenial Xerus) VM, I didn’t get past the service startup after installing.

Syslog reported:

This is from 16.04.3 LTS (Xenial Xerus)

apt list --installed shows:

libbz2-1.0/xenial,now 1.0.6-8 amd64 [installed]

ls -l /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libbz2.so.1*

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Dec 24 2016 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libbz2.so.1 -> libbz2.so.1.0.4
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Dec 24 2016 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libbz2.so.1.0 -> libbz2.so.1.0.4
-rw-r–r-- 1 root root 66800 May 20 2015 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libbz2.so.1.0.4

I note this is providing libbz2.so.1 and not libbz2.so, but this is a very stock 16.04.3 LTS install, and a separate xenial and zesty VMs have the same libbz2.so.1 layout.

I reverted to 1.11.0.4633 successfully, btw.

We do ship our own libraries (including libz2) in /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/lib. It seems like the start up script doesn’t properly set LD_LIBRARY_PATH maybe. We will look into it.

Thanks for the report. We will investigate. What DVR hardware are you using?

@tobiashieta
I am using HD HomeRun PRIME 3 tuner cable card. I PM you my logs.

Thanks

#19

Any idea when it will be available on the Docker image? I tried to manually update the .deb directly but it fails to start.

I installed the windows version from 1.11.0.4666. I installed it, and I couldn’t hit the “Launch” button. Clicked “Close”… I couldn’t find the program to start it manually. So I re-ran the installation file, and “Repaired” the install, and it worked this time. I was able to click the “Launch” button, and it also now shows up in my Start Menu.
