I’ve started to use Plex to stream my music library (been using it a long time for videos), and I’m a big user of the Radio feature, specifically Artist radio. This is an excellent algorithm and it comes up with some really good lists based on the seed artist, but I find I’m looking for something with a wider scope.
Virtually all commercial music streaming services allow a form of radio based on more than one seed. Pandora is particularly good at this. The issue I have, which I think will be somewhat common is that I have built up a very large and diverse music library over the years; some of the music belongs to my wife, who has fairly different music tastes.
So a radio based on the entire library to too broad, and plays lots of music I don’t want to listen to, but a radio based on a single artist, doesn’t play a lot of things I do want to listen to. My half of the library varies from 70’s classic rock (e.g. AC/DC), through 90s and 2000s British indie (e.g. Oasis), with a mix of 80s and 90s pop/rock (e.g. 3 doors down), as well as some recent indie pop (I said I had been collecting for several years :)). If I choose any one of the artists in the example above, I virtually never hear anything from the other categories.
It had occurred to me, what I need here is an extension to artist radio that lets me add more than one artist as a seed. If I start with e.g. Genesis, Oasis, and Smash Mouth, I would get a broad mix of 70s classic, with some 80s/90s pop rock, and some British Indie.
It seems like a relatively minor enhancement, but it would be really useful in my case.
